I am using Firefox 55.03 on a Mac running yosemite and I have not received any notification of a upgrade to version 56. The only way I noticed the upgrade is to go to "about firefox".

I am suspecting my ISP because on Sept-29-2017 at 3:54 HR ESt a emergency upgrade was performed. My Firefox browser is set to"Check for updates, but let you choose whether to install them" Can anyone tell me why this is occurring?

No upgrade is labeled "emergency upgrade" except for fake messages.

Is that what happen?

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Let’s do a full clean re-install;

Download Firefox For All languages And Systems {web link}

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.

Using your file browser, open the Programs Folder on your computer.

Windows: C:\Program Files C:\Program Files (x86)

Mac: Open the "Applications" folder. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac

Linux: Check your user manual. If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it. See Install Firefox on Linux; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux

If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder Firefox in your home directory. http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Do Not remove the profiles folder.

Look for, and rename any Mozilla or Firefox program folders by adding .old to them. Do not rename the Mozilla Thunderbird folder if there is one.

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one. Then run the installer. If all goes well, remove the OLD folders when you are done. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ If there is a problem, start your Computer in safe mode and try again.

During the first several days after a new version is released (Firefox 56 was released on the 28th), when Firefox pings the update server, only a fraction of users are allowed access to the update. This is to get an initial sample to detect any critical problems in the update. Then there may be a pause for a couple days to watch crash stats and support posts. Then if no fix is needed, everyone will get the update. Please don't take it personally -- I'm sure it's random!

jscher2000, I don't understand. If Firefox has an upgrade available why would they only allow a fraction of users to be aware of the new version? It's Sept-30-2017, that is 2 days my Firefox version was not aware of any upgrade.

Because at least half the new versions seem to have severe bugs that render Firefox inoperable or cause data loss on some systems? If you want it now, of course, you can get it now using a full installer, but I don't think you should be upset that you weren't selected to go first this time around. Your turn will come.

This is only about receiving an automatic update without the need to take action. The Mozilla update servers wouldn't be able to handle a few hundred million updates in a short time. It can take weeks to provide all users with an update. It is always possible to update manually via "Firefox -> About Firefox".
