Hi there,

Another Windows user trying to get Window 10 to be an OS rather than an entity with its own 'sheep herding' directive for the window populace.

Moved 6.5 GB of Mail folders from Live mail to Tbird. seemed to be working good until I clicked on Tbird's Help about, and the next thing I know I was in a version upgrade loop! After 2 un-chosen upgrades, I denied myself the urge to click on help-about again(to see what version i was at) until I had found the setting that would let me 'research and chose' whether a given version upgrade had something I desired.

my current version is 45.4.0. The un-chosen version before that was 38.0 I can roll back to this as I made a system restore point, but that is the version I first started seeing the hangs in. Unfortunately, the Help-about auto update feature caught me off guard so I wasn't able to create system image prior to this update. My download folder (Thunderbirdsetup17.0.exe) suggests it was version 17.0. I had just finished about 8 hours of recreating folders in tBird in which to import (one folder at a time) all my emails. During that time, I recall answering and sending several emails without the constant Write hangs I am experiencing now. It is really totally unusable. Takes a hour to make 4-6 sentences

It's not my antivirus. I totally uninstalled Bitdefender prior to even deciding to try Tbird for an issue where bitdefender would allow system restoration points to be recalled. I believe they are working on this issue. Meanwhile I have Windows Defender running

After adding both Tbird's Mail Folder (mechanical drive) and Tbird's program files (SSD) to Defender's exclusions, to no avail, I turned off Defender altogether. Still unusable.

I also read somewhere that reducing some fonts helped in some cases. I did manage to reduce the fonts in Win 10 font folder to 148, but got frustrated because the windows entity is reserving a large number of foreign language fonts and wingdings and bats or whatever for it's own personal use. Although I don't understand how an OS can have personal preferences! Anyway, this did not help.

I have 2 email accounts both configured as pop3. Once of which contains about 5.5 GB of emails (stored locally). For add-ons, I have the en-US dictionary by Mozilla. For extension, I have the Import/exportTools I used to painstakingly import emls from multiple folders into newly created folder in Tbird's profiles

Perhaps I should mention I am technical, a DeVry Grad with a systems development degree, and with some decades of experience and have been using Microsoft products since Dos 1.0

Questions:

Does anybody have any ideas that would see me keep version 45.4.0 as a usable mail client? If I have to go back to 17.0, can I just rerun the thunderbirdsetup17.0.exe file I have? Or do I need to uninstall 45.4.0? If I uninstal 45.4.0, will I loose any of my mail folders? Will I loose the us-en Dictionary I finally got working? And last but not least, what security issues am I facing running the older 17.0 version?

And while I am at it, I an confused with the Local Folders business. All my mail folders are local. I have one computer, this window 10 one, with a pop mail client that is deleting server emails older than 2 weeks. How am I supposed to deal with tTbird's archive feature that is intent on archiving from the same drive to the same drive? Or is this my problem? do I need to "archive" about 5 GB from A to B in the same program to the same drive to make Tbird happy and thus allow me to create emails? As a programmer I can't possibly see code written that would crash one 'interactive' subroutine because another 'background' subroutine that seems intent to shuffling 5 GB of inert eml files every 30 seconds. Na. Can't be. Right?

Preferably, I would like a solution so that I can keep 45.4.0 and also continue updating, My next most preferable is to keep a version of Tbird because I like it And lastly, I don't want to go searching for another replacement for live mail, but I need a working mail client.

I apologize for all the words, but sometimes it's best to dump out everything to a support forum because it can be just some small thing revealed that triggers the solution.

Hello,

After sending in a rather wording request for help with Thunderbird Email, I was just thrown off when I received an email subjected as "please confirm your FireFox Help Question" . I had to come back in and ensure it was Indeed Thunderbird and not Firefox where I posted too. Or did I?

Unfortunately Mozilla abandoned development on this forum, after they hard coded Firefox into almost everything. But you got you wordy topic in the right place.

My short answer is I am not aware of one.

My long answer is, I had some luck with Windows 10 which I wrote a blog post about. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2016/08/windows-10-and-thunderbird-firefox.html

But that has not fixed things entirely. I still see micro hangs that loose two or three words in a sentence, mostly in Firefox as I spe a lot of time typing here.

Based on some other funky things my computer is doing I think that it might be down to the USB bus and my keyboard. I am about ready to start using a wired keyboard again to see if that helps things. I see things like the Backspace key will not work but every other key will, leads me in the USB bus direction. Perhaps my motherboard drivers need a refresh.

Two questions really. Two replies to try and keep it a little clear. I ramble.

Local folder is supposed to be a global repository for multiple POP mail accounts.

In Account settings under server settings click the advanced button to start using the global (local) folders. Not that selecting the option removes the existing account from the folder pane, but does not relocate existing account folders with mail. You need o do that manually before selecting the global inbox.

I am a happy user of the global inbox for my pop accounts. I have no interest in seeing a list of accounts, all I want are the emails from them all aggregated so I can deal with them.

Unfortunately IMAP does not lend itself to a global view of mail and we are struck with them are separate accounts. The unified folder view was the developers attempt to create a global inbox that was not a global inbox. It works, but is not a simple in my mind as the original.

The archive function should not appear automatically at all. However the shortcut key of A is easily pressed when doing other keyboard maneuvers. Especially if you are in the habit of using Ctrl+A to select all.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply. I read your blog, watched the video and noted my PCI Express Link State Power Management setting was already off. And although anything is possible, I am leaning towards ruling out hardware problems, given everything else is working fine and was working fine. The two system changes I have made are load Thunderbird and update Firefox to version 49.0.2. My default browser is Chrome. Firefox is installed as a secondary choice. I seldom use it although my wife does. And that is only for browsing.

Thanks so much again. Matt.

Since Thunderbird Version 45.4.0 is still practically unusable for creation of email:

I am still looking for the following answers.

a.) I would welcome any more recommendations to help solve the email write hangs so that I can keep version 45.4.0 ?

b.) What would the ramifications of uninstalling Thunderbird 45.4.0 and reinstalling Thunderbird 17.0: will I lose all my mail imports? ; where can I find the best list of security vulnerabilities addressed in all of version 17.0's successor versions?

c.) Will Archiving about 90% of mails within Thunderbird Pop account solve the problem? Noting that I don't use Global accounts, and that the process would just be moving the mails from one spot to another spot on the same local drive. Specifically from one of the 2 pop account folders to the local folders (i believe that is where the archive feature would put them). And if so, would they still be readily accessible?.

Another day goes by trying to solve this problem. All I can report is: No success.

But I have learned that hangs while writing emails are persistent no matter whether online or offline.

Effort to see what T-bird 45.4.0 is doing during these hangs yields nothing. Truly Nothing! It's not writing to disk, or consuming CPU, or communicating over the network, or anything else that I can see (except turn the cursor into that blue spinning object when it's moved over the email writing window.

Furthermore the Windows 10 Event Viewer shows absolutely nothing for errors raised during these hang periods

It appears to be all on it's lonesome in its confusion.

Do you use the calendar, Lightning? If not, try disabling it.

Hi Zenos,

Thanks for the reply.

Disabled since day one my friend. The only two items I have left installed in the Add-ons section are the ImportExportTools I am using to bring mail over from Livemail, and the US-EN English Dictionary.

I am using Windows 10. And my livemail (worked for several months after 10 install), started to have issues trying to send mail out. So I turned to Thunderbird. Which is just awesome, if I can overcome this Write hang. There is much ado about this Write hanging, but nothing I've tried from all suggestions has solved it for me.

I an tempted to roll back to Tbird version 17.0, but am waiting for someone of the forum to advise me on that. Cheers, Allan

I don't have a solution, but I think there may be a more general issue with 45.4.0. TB upgraded my win 7 system a couple of days ago and it TB is now very slow and hangs a LOT. I am just starting to investigate, but I have seen several other posts about slow/hang issues in the last couple of days.

HopeTbird....

1. you mention moving messages out of pop inbox. How many messages are in there??

2. how many pop accounts?

3. how long have you been using Thunderbird?

4. Unfortunately no one suggested that you try safe mode. A starting point to diagnose problems with Thunderbird is:

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on or Theme interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender.

If that did not help:

If safe mode for the operating system fixes the issue, there's other software in your computer that's causing problems. Possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as program updates.

I'm sorry Wayne. I've long since moved on. I gave it about 3 days but really needed a working email client. I'm using something called eM Client now.

Thank you for the reply. It sounds like you're support directions would have dug deep down to identify the problem. But I've already uninstalled third and deleted the database.

Best regards allan

Understood. Thanks for the feedback.

FWIW, I'll throw out that if you had a large pop Inbox, say over 1,000 messages, that could be the problem.
