I'm on Windows 7. Used Firefox for several years, latterly mostly with Duckduckgo. The start page comes up, but when I type in a website nothing happens; same when I try to go to a bookmark. It doesn't even say it's 'searching'. I've done all the suggested things that I could find in the help pages (deactivate plug-ins, install new version, refresh, try new profile), but it remains utterly dead. Any suggestions please? Am using Internet Explorer to ask this question. This all happened after a week of not using the computer and when I tried Firefox it said it had had to close down in a hurry.

hello, please make sure that you have version 46.0.1 installed, which is available from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ (it was just released a short while ago and contains a fix for page loading issues very similar as in your description)

Alas, my version is 46.0.1, but it remains as dead as a doornail. I saw from the forum, if I'm not mistaken, that you had a similar problem. I'm glad the new version worked for you, but it hasn't brought Firefox to life for me.

Thanks all the same Martin

does it make any difference when you set firefox to "never remember history" in the menu ≡ > options > privacy panel and restart the browser afterwards?

Tried that -- several times, to make sure, but alas, still no contact between Firefox and the Internet. I would guess there's a switch somewhere that's been turned off, but where it might be... I have no idea.

Once again, many thanks Martin

please try the following (while firefox stays closed):

  • reboot your system in the first step
  • after you have restarted, press the windows-key+r and open: %localappdata%
  • an explorer window should open up. in there find the folder named mozilla and delete it.
  • try to start firefox again

if this didn't work, you could try creating a new firefox profile as well: Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles

I did what you suggested, but still the same, still no joining up with the Internet.

I created a new Profile when I went through the various suggestions on the Help page, so I don't think there is any point in doing this again. This means I currently have no favourites, so when I'm trying out Firefox I simply type bbc.com onto the top line.

Could it be something to do with the options to do with proxys? I have no idea what a proxy is (and I'm not even sure where I came across this -- to do with internet connection?) or caches?

Many thanks again
