Firefox does not remember scroll position when using back button to return to previous site

I'm browsing through, say, Google and I scroll down through the listings. I click on a site that's at the bottom of the list and am taken to that site. To return to the Google list, I hit the "back" button and I return to the top of the page, not to the bottom where I started. Google is just an example -- this happens on any page on which I scroll down, click a link, go to the new page, click the back button and I'm back at the top of the previous page, not where ever I was when I clicked. I've found a couple of add-ons on the web that say they fix the problem, but can't download them -- a message appears that it is not compatible with Firefox 6.0. I recall having this problem years ago with I.E. and I did find a fix, but I can't remember what (or where) it was.
