Firefox's Connection:close Behavior in SAML SP / NTLM Authentication Environment

Hello everyone,

We are currently investigating an issue where browsers are sending HTTP requests with Connection: close in the header during integrated Windows authentication (NTLM authentication) via SAML Service Provider (SP), leading to premature termination of the TCP connection.

This behavior occurs in the middle of the authentication process, preventing the NTLM authentication from completing and subsequently prompting for re-authentication.

We have observed the following browser behaviors:

Chrome and Edge: These browsers function without issues, communicating with Connection: keep-alive. Safari (macOS): Older versions of macOS with Safari exhibit the Connection: close behavior, leading to authentication failure. Newer versions of macOS with Safari work correctly with Connection: keep-alive. Firefox (macOS): Even on the latest versions of macOS, Firefox continues to attach Connection: close, resulting in authentication failure. Upon reviewing logs, we've identified that various browsers attach the Connection: close header during the NTLMSSP_NEGOTIATE request in the NTLM authentication sequence. Although this happens in an environment with a load balancer, we have confirmed that the load balancer is not modifying the header; rather, the client (browser) is adding it.

We would appreciate your insights into the conditions under which Firefox attaches Connection: close to HTTP requests, especially considering the differences across macOS versions and other browsers, addressing the following points:

Are there any known conditions or past cases where Firefox outputs Connection: close in an NTLM authentication environment via SAML SP? Given that older Safari versions show similar behavior, we are also considering if there's a common factor depending on NTLM authentication and browser version. What are the general heuristics, logic, or triggers for a browser to decide to "close" a connection or to attach Connection: close? We are particularly interested in cases that occur mid-authentication process. Could specific configurations (e.g., the combination of SAML and NTLM authentication, or the presence of an intermediate proxy/load balancer) potentially influence Firefox's Connection: close behavior? Are there any additional logs or debugging information we should collect from the Firefox client side to further pinpoint this issue? Any guidance or suggestions you could provide to help us resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Ordered some new checks from Costco as a "guest" since I haven't set up an online account (generally speaking, I wouldn't use, but to order checks, I need to do it online - not in the store). I put my full order together in the cart, went through the full process of completing the order and payment, but after submitting, I expected the order confirmation page. However, I received the notice that the Harland Clarke check printing vendor site won't allow firefox to display the page. Without that confirmation page, I don't have an order number to reference. The instructions provided says to embed the link (which link?) in another tab to open the missing page. I've also tried following all other instructions; going on the Mozilla/Firefox desktop/ trying to find a Mozilla contact phone number, etc. All that happens is that I go into a never-ending circle - which means no-where. What am I missing? This is what I get:

Fix error “Website will not allow Firefox to display the page.” 3–4 minutes

Firefox, Firefox for Android Firefox, Firefox for Android Last updated: 8/24/25 36% of users voted this helpful

Some websites don’t allow their content to appear inside another website. If a site tries to embed a page that blocks this, Firefox will show an error that it cannot open the page:

“To protect your security, [website] will not allow Firefox to display the page if another site has embedded it.”

This is a security feature on the website being embedded. It prevents clickjacking, where a site tries to load another site without permission, often to trick users into clicking something they didn’t intend.

This error is not caused by Firefox. It’s a choice made by the website owner. Why does this happen?

Websites can control how their content is used. They may block it from being shown inside another site using special security settings like:

   X-Frame options headers
   Content security policy rules

These settings are common for banking sites, schools, government services and others that need tight security. What can I do?

You can still view the blocked content by opening it directly. On desktop

Right-click the link or embedded area.
Select Open Link in New Tab or Open Link in New Window.
If you can’t right-click, try copying the link (long-press on Mac trackpads) and pasting it into a new tab.

Tip: You can also drag the link into a new tab if using Firefox on desktop. On mobile (phone or tablet)

Tap and hold the link or embedded area (where the content should appear).
Choose Open in New Tab from the menu.
If that doesn’t work, try copying the link (if visible) and pasting it into a new tab manually.

Warning: On mobile, this may be harder to do if the embedded content doesn’t show clearly. Look for a blank or gray box on the page. What if I need to use the original page?

Sometimes the website that’s embedding the content depends on that embedded page to work properly (for example, a school login system or internal portal).

If that’s the case:

Try opening the embedded page directly (as described above).
If that doesn’t help, you may need to contact the site owner and explain the issue.

Need help understanding this error?

If you're unsure what the page is trying to load or can’t figure out where to click:

Look for a blank box or missing content; that’s likely where the blocked page should appear.
If you're on mobile, try rotating your device or zooming out to better view hidden content.
Still stuck? Copy the page link and share it with your IT support, teacher or website admin.

Running Firefox 140.8.0esr (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro on an HP laptop. The feature/problem described works properly with Chrome and Edge. The problem occurs when accessing the following article:

  https://www.comsoc.org/publications/ctn/turning-fiber-sensing-system-magic-fiber-optics-sensing

If the window is set wide enough, there is a sidebar displaying, "Share this content in X". If the screen is squeezed down (i.e. drag the right margin to the left) far enough, the sidebar will disappear. That feature is handled properly, but as the window width is increased and the sidebar appears, the main body of text does not wrap properly. It appears that Firefox is not compensating for the width of the sidebar.

NOTE: As I am not a HTML expert, my subject line referencing a particular HTML class could be misleading.

A user I am servicing uses Firefox every day. They are on Windows 11. Every afternoon (sometimes at other times), Firefox stops working and loses its internet connection (everything else on their computer continues to be connected).  When they close and restart Firefox to reconnect, it then tells me the user that they are using an old profile and need to create a new one.  They're able to re-log into their Firefox account, which eventually resyncs all their data, but they then have to re-sign into everything, which is a major inconvenience.  The only workaround the I have found is to reinstall Firefox, ever time this happens which then allows the user to use all their settings until they have to repeat the process the next day (i.e., everything remains signed in and/or logging back in is easier than described above).

Latest version of Firefox on macOS, Mac Mini M2 - 8 GB RAM and MacBook Air M3 - 16 GB RAM: Firefox malfunctions on launch - I have to force quit and relaunch it - Firefox starts to load then freezes. Firefox works, then I launch other applications like Chrome, Thunderbird, etc. Firefox freezes on the M2 8GB RAM but rarely on the M3 16GB. A few weeks ago, these problems didn't exist on either of my Macs - since an automatic update that I didn't notice, it's now a consistent occurrence.

I like to default to having threading on. It used to be that when I opened my Inbox, every email thread was closed/collapsed. Now they're open (started somewhat recently).

I can get numerous separate emails where each one can generate lots of responses, meaning they threads get long, sometimes within a few minutes or hours. Having them closed by default (rather than open or unthreaded) makes it to see each individual email chain and other interspersed single emails.

I tried google searching; also tried threaded and grouped by sort (with the default sort set to thread), and it doesn't seem to help. Any help would be appreciated!

In February this year I started having an issue with reading pdf formatted statements from my bank' (bank and personal information removed). Initially I thought it was some change at the bank so I sent the letter below to my bank.

Further experimenting with Microsoft Edge and Firefox leads me to believe the issue may be with recent changes to firefox. The attached jpg file shows the problem, though not a solution.

I would be curious to know if there is some (new) setting in Firefox to correct the problem.

Text of letter to bank:

re: document access on site

You have evidently made some changes in your account display and I have to tell you there are issues with it.

Previously the account document came up as PDF. Today I accessed the current statement and immediately noticed the change in display format.

I usually do two things here. First I print the document. The print button worked as expected. Next I SAVE a copy for future reference. The download button DID NOT WORK.

I had to use the print save to file function. This is where I found the problem. I saw this when I checked my print queue as well. Instead of PDF the document is now PDF.js viewer.

I have to ask why you went to java script when the original PDF format worked properly every time?

On the plus side, my pdf viewer still reads the saved file. It is the unnecessary print to file step to which I object.

I am not at all happy with this change and would encourage you to return to the previous process. Since it was NOT BROKE I am at a lost to understand WHY YOU FIXED IT.
