in previous versions of FF (up to 3.x?) there was a bar at the bottom of the browser window which showed: - a lock when on an encrypted page - a field when the download pop-up was closed while there were still downloads going on and showing how much time was left for the download(s) to finish

are those icons / functionalities still available available ? if not, would it be possible to put them back?

The Statusbar is gone and the "lock" with it, as of Firefox 4.0. Security information about a web page is shown by the Site Identity Button.
The old padlock could give users a false sense that a site is secure by not supplying all of the information about a site and only showed that there is a secure connection that didn't guarantee that you are connected to the right server. The Site Identity Button was introduced in Firefox 3.0 to show more complete "identity" information for HTTPS web pages.

You can add a padlock to the location bar with the Padlock add-on- https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/padlock-icon

thank you for the Padlock!

exactly what i was looking for :)

EDIT: i don't use the Navigation Toolbar, thus whatever is shown there is useless to me ~:o)

i had added an item "Display the progress of ongoing downloads" to the add-ons bar earlier (it seemed related to downloads...) but it didn't seem to *display* any activity, thus i included it in the question;

is there possibly a problem with my FF version (i use ver. 9.0.1-2.9.2 provided by openSUSE rel. 12.1)?

EDIT: the plugin is "Download Statusbar" ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/download-statusbar/ )

found an Add-on that even though not as simple & elegant as the original, sort of does the job: download statusbar

thank you for your help!
