Firefox doesn't shutdown cleanly

On several different PCs, and all versions to 3.6.10, Firefox doesn't always shutdown cleanly. It's gone from my desktop, but it's still running in the background. To kill it, I must open the Task manager and kill the process. This is clumsy, and I'm hoping someone knows how to shutdown Firefox cleanly and totally.
