"login to server imap.gmail.com with username [redacted]@gmail.com failed." when trying to download. However, I can go directly to gmail and log on with the same password.
Thunderbird indicates that I'm not using a primary password and when I ask to see the password for my gmail account it asks for a PIN. I have no record of a PIN for Thunderbird. I'm instructed to go to setting>accounts to change the PIN. but cannot find it: settings>account settings lead me nowhere.

Google also changed how third-party email clients log into Gmail. This requires changing two settings in Thunderbird to fix. First, go to Account Settings -> your email address -> Edit outgoing server... and change "Authentication method" from "Normal password" to "OAuth2" and click OK. Next, click on "Server Settings" under your email address and also change "Authentication method" from "Normal password" to "OAuth2". Finally, restart Thunderbird. A window should pop up with Google's log in page that also has the Thunderbird logo. Log into Google like normal and Thunderbird should be able to access your Gmail again.

Are you using Windows? The PIN that you are being asked for might be the "Windows Hello" PIN that you use to log in to your PC. If that PIN does not work, can you attach a screenshot of the window that asks for a PIN?
Thanks, Ben, Using the "Windows Hello" PIN worked. The password stored in Thunderbird for gmail is the same as I now have to use to log into my Google gmail account with Firefox, but Thunderbird still fails to log in.
