Speed tests shows normal uploads on Firefox and Edge but on Firefox only downloads show 0.0

Good evening. I have run the Ookla speed test through Edge and my download is 212.94 Mbps and my upload is 11.76 Mbps and uses the Spectrum Syracuse Server. Running Spectrum speed test on Edge registers Spectrum Syracuse as the optimum server and download is 236.2 and upload 11.6. Both are using my Spectrum server in Syracuse, NY.

When I run Ookla through Firefox I got 227.17 down and 11.63 up. Spectrum's speed test through Firerefox's Syracuse server 231.8 up and 11.5 down.

However for a while earler this evening when I ran both programs on both browsers and both through Syracuse's servers I was getting downs of 0.0 to 0.7. I reset the modem and router and still had low speeds but shortly after I got the readings I wrote in the first two paragraphs.

What would be the reason for this? Anything particular with Firefox? Something I should look out for in the future? Partially a curiosity while the other part being proactive.

Thanks for anybody who can take time to answer.

Chosen solution

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a download manager.

This download manager works separately from the browser. The browser tells it what to download, and off it goes.

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org It is a powerful modern download accelerator and organizer for Windows and Mac.

Today I am back to showing 0.0 uploads on Firefox through Ookla and Spectrum's speed tests but 11.6 through Edge. Is this going to affect how my Firefox is working?

I ran the test with Firefox in 'safe mode' just to see and the uploads are still showing as 0.0.

I just ran the Android Firefox App and that provided accurate up and downloads while the browser will not.

I am going to look for it this morning. But could you tell me why every other browser, including the Firefox app on my phone shows the correct uploads but the browser on my PC still shows 0.0?

If the speed test on a webpage show 0 (zero) and there is also no animation then it is likley that you block JavaScript.

If you use extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) that can block content (Adblock Plus, NoScript, DuckDuckGo PE, Disconnect, Ghostery, Privacy Badger, uBlock Origin) always make sure such extensions do not block content.

Firefox shows a purple shield instead of a gray shield at the left end of the location/address bar in case Enhanced Tracking Protection is blocking content. You can click shield icon for more detail and possibly disable the protection. You can check the Web Console for messages about blocked content.

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Thank you cor-el as I think we are making progress.

All addons are up to date.

Tried with protection (purple) and without (grey with slash). Spectrum showed zero on both. Shut down Firefox and restarted. Ran in both modes again with accurate results.

I ran the computer in safe mode and ran with and without protection 2 different tests. First test right off the bat.

I went back and restarted into regular mode. I went to Spectrum's site and Ookla's site. Both gave me 0.0. Shutdown and restarted Firefox and worked normally.

While I am typing this I am testing on Spectrum.net which links to the test from my account and the shield is on and showing accurate results. I also tested through infinity and spectrum.com and have accurate results.

I tried it with the test being the only browser window open as well as with at least one other. Same results either way.

Okay so I restarted the computer and went to Firefox. I ran the test in a browser window by itself and got 0.0. I manually shut down Firefox and did it again with perfect results.

Did it a second time same as before. Restart Firefox and run test first thing. Got a 0.0. again. As strange as it sounds could I not be waiting long enough for Firefox to 'kick in' before running the test? As soon as I hit the desktop I open Firefox and once it loads open the speed test window. But if it ran too early wouldn't it not show the download speed correctly also?

So we have that the first PC boot of the day, or PC reboot, the first time Firefox is open and the test run uploads show at 0.0. I manually close Firefox and re-open. The second time the browser is opened all tests run as normal with expected results.

Any thoughts?

I actually posted a post just before this one and it said awaiting approval by a moderator but the previous one automatically added to to the discussion. Strange.

Long story short, all extensions up to date, safe mode in Windows 10 seemed to work fine and protection shield or no shield in regular Windows 10 the first test through Firefox shows 0.0.
