I have rather an obscure question. I read and tried the fixes in 7 different support questions and found that what seems to have fixed my problem was not mentioned in any of them. I hope to find a better solution here but at least the workaround I found may be of help to someone.

A few months ago, I found that trying to access my Verizon account (www.verizonwireless.com), which I have been doing on Firefox for years, would result in a 'Please wait' screen that persists until the tab or page is closed. I checked Firefox's javascript settings and updated Java on my system but to no avail and, after an hour or two of trying to ferret out the problem by deleting cookies, history, etc., I ran out of time and set this issue aside. I had to switch to Safari (on the same computer) in order to access that account.

This morning, I wanted to change some settings on my router and update its firmware. When I tried to log into the router's web interface, I got the following error message:

Checking JavaScript Support To provide an enhanced user interface, this Router uses JavaScript extensively. If this page is not quickly replaced, your Browser does NOT support JavaScript. Please enable JavaScript in your Browser, or use a different Browser.

The page was never replaced. I had to switch to Safari to access the router. The Verizon page still showed the eternal 'please wait' page as well.

I tried the following: 1) Turned off all security software 2) Refreshed Firefox 3) Deleted history and cookies using 'Settings' 4) Re-checked about:config to make sure 'java:enabled' is set to 'True' 5) Turned off all extensions 6) Checked my Java version (J8, v111 is current at this time)

In the end, after trying all of these remedies, in looking over my settings, I noticed that the Java Applet Plug-in was set to 'Ask to Activate'. This is a sensible security setting and I've never changed it but, not knowing what else to do, I changed it to 'Always Activate'. To my delight, it caused both pages (Verizon's authorization page and my router's web interface page) to open and function properly.

During the time that the plugin was set to 'Ask to Activate', I don't recall ever being 'asked' and the two pages I've cited above certainly didn't seem to prompt such a request. My questions are: 1) Is the 'Ask' window in some obscure place (in the toolbar or someplace) where I might have missed it? 2) I realize that there may be security risks in leaving it set to 'Always Activate'; is there a way to set it to 'Always Activate' only for certain sites (like the ones mentioned above)?
