Firefox constantly hangs and occaisionally crcashes and affects all of my email accounts

more options

Hello, The problem of Firefox hanging and then crashing began when my Hotmail email account got switched over to Outlook.com. Yes I experienced a couple of hangs and crashes before that, but NOT almost everyday and multiple times a day and it has gotten worse ever since!!! At first it only affected my Hotmail email account. Now it is affecting my one Yahoo email account, and my one aol.com email account and it also affects many websites I visit!! Some websites that it affect: Facebook.com, NFL.com, Yahoo.com, YouTube.com, and others. It also affects my free desktop music streaming service through Spotify. It does NOT affect my mom's email account, nor my dad's email account, nor my one other Yahoo email account.

What have I done to try and remedy this problem? I have tried: Clearing web browser cache, clearing computer cache, clearing browser history, clearing cookies, restarting Firefox in "safe" mode, restarting Firefox with all add-ons as "never activate", disabling add-ons one by one to see which one causes the hangs and crashes, I scanned for: Viruses, Malware, and spyware nothing showed up except for cookies, and I have tried using other web browsers to check and see if it was my Hotmail or Yahoo email accounts. But none of that had any affect, except switching to a different web browser.

I do not know if is: 1) my soon to be 10 year old computer; due to age and/or out dated software/operating system etc. 2) Adobe Flash; due to corrupted files or something else, because flash keeps crashing. 3) something that causes a "bad" interaction between Hotmail, Firefox, and other websites/web related programs. 4) there is Malware, Spyware, and/or a Virus that my Security programs have been unable to pick up. 5) Something I have not thought about as of yet.

This could all be a moot point in a few weeks. Why? Because in about 2 to 3 weeks I hope to be able to order the parts for a new computer build. But I would like to figure what is causing this problem so I can either fix it, learn how to deal with it by minimizing its affects, or be able to fix it if/or when it happens on my new computer.

As far as I know of all my programs and add-ons, except 2 add-ons, are up to date.

And of course, it just hanged several times for a total of about 1 to 2 minute maybe 3 minutes! Seemed like 5 to 10! LOL

Open the computer's Control Panel and run the Updater program.

Are you using Firefox to access your e-mail providers, or Thunderbird?

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache.

  • Clear the Cache and
  • Remove Cookies
Warning ! ! This will log you out of sites you're logged in to.

Type about:preferences<Enter> in the address bar.

  • Cookies; Select Privacy. Under History, select Firefox will Use Custom Settings. Press the button on the right side called Show Cookies. Use the search bar to look for the site. Note; There may be more than one entry. Remove All of them.
  • Cache; Select Advanced > Network. Across from Cached Web Content, Press Clear Now.

If there is still a problem, Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). While you are in safe mode;

Type about:preferences#advanced<Enter> in the address bar.

Under Advanced, Select General. Look for and turn off Use Hardware Acceleration.

Poke around safe websites. Are there any problems?

Then restart.

Hello, I use Firefox to access my email providers: Yahoo.com, Hotmail/Outlook.com and aol.com. Also I regularly clear the cache and at least monthly clear the cookies, but that does NOT help!! I can give it another try.

I did the first part: Clear the Cache and the specific Cookies for Hotmail. And So far so good. But there were no other Tabs open but the one this was in.

I will check back in if the problem happens again.

You can check for issues caused by plugins and consider to block Flash on outlook websites.

  • set plugins to "Ask to Activate" on the about:addons page ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins)
  • plugins are not affected by Firefox Safe Mode

If you have submitted crash reports then please post the IDs of one or more recent crash reports that start with "bp-".

  • bp-xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

You can find the report ID of recent crash reports on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" page (about:support).

  • click the "All Crash Reports" button on this page to open the about:crashes page and see all crash reports.

Alternatively you can open about:crashes via the location/address bar.

I have a question on the about:crashes page. When I check there, there are a lot with the "bp" in front and then there are a lot with out the "bp" in front. They are all mixed in there. Do I have to go through them all individually to submit them?

Also when I clicked on some of them the other night I got a message that said:

"Crash Not Found

We couldn't find the Crash ID you're after. If you recently submitted this crash, it may still be in the queue.

If you believe this message is an error, please submit a Bugzilla ticket describing what happened, and please include the URL for this page."

What is up with that? Some of those that I clicked on were created today or the other night while others were months ago or even years ago. So why would they not be found if they were reported so long ago?

Also a few that I clicked on nothing happened. So I clicked again, Nothing happened!! When I opened the link in a new tab here is the message I received:

"You're seeing this page because the crash report you selected was held back from submission. For statistical purposes, we don't need every crash report and sometimes we decline the submission of a crash report as a form of throttling. If you'd like to see your crash report, type about:crashes into your location bar and your report will be automatically submitted to our server where we'll give it priority processing.

Thank you for reporting your crashes."

I saved a screenshot of all the ones that were "submitted" today, A majority were ones from many months ago and I received the "Crash Not Found" message. But the ones at the bottom (4 or 5) are the most recent "crashes" from earlier this afternoon and this evening and one from last night.

I hope that helps. But Maybe it might be too much Information. In that case I am sorry.

I have previously tried keeping all of my add-ons at: "Ask to Activate" and that did not seem to help!

For some reason it all seems to have gotten much worse when all of Microsoft's email accounts were switched to Outlook. Ever since then Firefox and My Hotmail/Outlook email account have gone completely haywire!!! Firefox freezes and crashes, my computer also freezes, my Hotmail email jumps erratically, is very slow to respond, and Hotmail and Firefox will also give Adobe Flash Crash messages. Then in December my one Yahoo email account and AOL email account started to become affected when opened with Firefox. Also other websites would be affected such as Facebook. The only common thread is Adobe Flash. But When I try to check for an updated version it wants me to download the "Cloud" Version!! I do not have a "Cloud" account. So could that be contributing this issue?

Those with the BP have been submitted to the Mozilla servers. Those without have not. Clicking on those should send the information to Mozilla.

It's hard to say. It could be a problem with the crash servers

"You're seeing this page because the crash report you selected was held back from submission. For statistical purposes, we don't need every crash report and sometimes we decline the submission of a crash report as a form of throttling.

As the message says, they don't need every report. I think this happens when it is the same type of crash that the user has already sent several times.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web Link} by holding down the <Shift>

Is the problem still there?

The link for: "Starting The Computer In Safe Mode; Free Online Encyclopedia" is for Linux Safe Mode. I am using: Windows Vista.

Question: Should I try starting Firefox in Safe Mode first then if the problem is still there then use Firefox in safe mode with Windows in Safe Mode with Networking? Or should I use Firefox in Safe Mode While Windows in Safe Mode with networking?

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen or hold down the Shift key) to see if that has effect.

I tried restarting my computer in Safe Mode and then Having Firefox in Safe mode, But I still had the issue, but it was not as bad. So it did help a little.

I am at a loss as to what can be causing this issue.

Now the Problem is getting much Worse!! It is now affecting almost every aspect of my computer!!! No matter what program I use!! I have scanned for viruses and malware but nothing is detected!! It affects Spotify free, Google chrome, It not only affects my Hotmail email account but it is now affecting my Yahoo email account and AOL email account when I open them on Firefox. It also affects any news article I open on Yahoo, AOL, Google, Hotmail/MSN/Outlook.com, Facebook, and many other websites!! It is getting to the point where I cannot do anything on my computer!!!

I am thinking it has to be interaction between: Java, Shockwave flash, and Silverlight Plug-ins and Firefox!! Why? Because when I have them Disabled everything works relatively fine except for the websites that require those plug-ins. But then when I have those plug-ins as either "ask to activate" or "always activate" my computer system and Firefox goes haywire and becomes nearly inoperable!!!!

I am going to be building a new computer in the next few days! I am expecting the final part for my computer to be delivered tomorrow and then I can build it!! Then I have to order the operating system and either Microsoft Office or an Alternative. Then install Anti-virus/anti-malware.

But it still puzzles me that this problem, which mostly started when my Hotmail email account got switched over to Outlook and the one Firefox update at the exact same time!!! Since then it has steadily gotten worse and worse and spread to other programs on my computer and even affected my other email accounts!! The commonality between them: They all use: Java, Shockwave Flash (Adobe Flash), and/or Silverlight, either installed on the computer or web-browser plug-ins!!

I have tried getting help on various forums and no one can come up with an answer/fix/solution!! The only thing they seem to say to try and solve it: Clean install of everything!!! Basically wipe the Hard drive, reformat it and then reinstall everything!!! But why should I do that when I am going to build a new computer in a few days?

Thanks for the help.

Remove all of those programs; Java, Shockwave flash, Silverlight Plug-ins and Firefox

After rebooting the computer, run a registry scanner if you have one.

Now use the computer using Win Internet Explorer. Any problems other than not having the plugins?

Now install Firefox and use it. Any problems? [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

Now install ONE of the plugins. Run the computer for a while. Any problem?

Why don't you post the 5 or 10 most recent Crash Reports ID #'s, so we can get an idea as to what is causing Firefox to crash. And with the un-submitted Crash Reports, submit only the most recent one's to the Crash Reporter system, if any are in the 10 most recent. Old crash data from months ago probably won't give any actionable information for this problem.

We need click-able hyperlinks for those Crash Report ID's. An image makes it so "we" have to type the Crash Report ID's; can't copy'n'paste from an image.

As far as Java goes; rarely used these days, especially with webmail websites. Java is slated to disappear as a plugin for Firefox come March 2017, and is already "dead" in Windows 64-bit versions of Firefox.
