After messing with some add-ons today, I tried to load up a page only to have flash instantly crash. I reloaded and it did the same thing again. I tried other pages, yet the same problem. I closed Firefox, loaded it back up and still the same thing.

I tried loading up Google Chrome and it worked fine so I thought Firefox was just being wonky, I restarted my computer and nothing changed. I updated flash and still the same. I restarted in safe mode with all add -ons disabled and the same thing. I even uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled (I don't know if this matters, but when I reinstalled it and it started up all the tabs that I previously had open when I uninstalled came back up; I thought that was a bit strange, if anyone could shed light on that I'd appreciate it.)

I have no clue what's going on. I tried the Mozilla troubleshooting, everything listed except disabling hardware acceleration (I couldn't figure out how to do that, it told me to right click on something on the page, but that was flash and it immediately crashed and I didn't see anything in the settings for Adobe Flash about hardware acceleration.)

If anyone could help I'd appreciate it.

Have you viewed your Crash Reports to see what's happening?

Please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.

The crash report is several pages of data. We need the report numbers to see the whole report.

  1. Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
  2. Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.

Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

(Please don't take a screenshot of your crashes, just copy and paste the IDs. The below image is just an example of what your Firefox screen should look like.)

I tried with protected mode disabled earlier and some odd things happened.

I deselected the option for protected mode exited Firefox (thinking it might need a reboot to be effective), reopened and tried opening a page with Flash. Firefox immediately crashed and asked me to send a report, which is the first time this happened.

After I restarted Firefox from that, I loaded up the flash page again and it worked just fine. I went back and turned protected mode back on, quit Firefox and loaded up the page again and it worked yet again. Thinking it was fixed, I put it to the back of my mind.

I came back later after restarting my computer and the same thing started happening again, Flash immediately crashing as soon as it tried to load in and me simply getting the error "The Adobe Flash plugin has crashed. Reload the page and try again."

I tried what I did previously the same way, I got the same Firefox crash after turning off the protected mode, loaded up the page after restarting Firefox and it still didn't work. This time when I turned protected mode back on FIrefox crashed when I tried to load Flash, which didn't happen before.

So long story short, problem still not solved. I wanted to be as in-depth as possible with my processes to try to help you guys help me out.

Also, I can't seem to turn off HWA in Flash. From everything I've seen, Flash actually needs to be running and then I right click and choose the option from there, however Flash always crashes right away so that's not possible.

Well, everyone of those crashes appears to be caused by Flash. And nothing in the Modules page of any of those reports is "red flagged" as "contributing" to the crash.

Sorry, I can't add anything to this discussion.

Any idea what caused it to suddenly go haywire then? It works fine in Chrome, and a search of the forums here showed that someone was having a similar issue and it's a problem with the latest iteration of Flash, that Adobe is aware and working on a fix. I'm not certain how true that is or even how to verify it but it does sound like there's something wrong with Flash itself.

Is there anything at all that I could possibly do to fix this? It's rather annoying.

Chrome uses a different version of Flash that Firefox uses, no direct comparison is possible. All I can say is that Windows 10 users seem to be posting lately about crashes caused by Flash with the latest version of Flash.

I use Windows 7 and purposely avoided the last two Flash updates to see what happens with other Firefox users, and as it turns out I think I will just skip updating Flash for awhile and stay with Flash 21.0.0.242 which isn't crashing for me.

My advice is to go back a version or two, and live with the "click-to-play" needed for slightly out of date versions of Flash, and have Flash crash less or maybe not at all.

Well I gave what you suggested a try, going back in versions of Flash Player step by step (a total of three different versions) before finally ending up on Flash Player 20.0.0.306 and each one still has the same problem, crashing as soon as it tries to load in.

However, completely uninstalling Flash has the effect that you mentioned, where I have to manually hit a play button to get Flash videos to load.

Any idea why I might be having issues even when going back to previous versions?
