Firefox was running too slow to use, then it trashed my system

Firefox was running so slow it became unable, and a message appeared saying the slowness could be corrected by getting rid of out of date plugins. I hovered the mouse over the "yes" button and it was https://mozilla...xomething and after clicking it, the system froze and never came back. I had to reboot the system and it would not boot at all, with Windows trying for about an hour to restore from older checkpoints.

Finally I rebooted and now Firefox has no bookmarks (which I replaced) but still no saved passwords. I have read ab out using the 2 files key3.db and logins.json from the old Firefox data folder but copying them to where the corrupted files are (newest dated versions) it did nothing...I still cannot get into a lot of websites because I rely on Firefox to remember the passwords.

How can I fix this? I have over 6 hours invested in this.

Hi, I was hoping by now you would have solved the problem.

If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins or scanning for malware then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware. ...

It is of course worth knowing Firefox has an annoying habit or prompting you to do a refresh . This occurs for instance if you have not used Firefox for a while or if it was slow in starting up.

.... I am still looking for a way to take the copy of the logins.json file from the Old_Firefox_data folder but still have not found a way to do this, ....

So that sounds like it could have been a refresh and not malware. Although that does not rule out initial problems having been malware related.

That sounds miserable. I don't know why Windows wouldn't start. Try copying the files over from your old profile folder to your current one again. Make sure Firefox has exited fully and stopped updating the current files before replacing them. When you start up Firefox after that, does anything show in the Saved Logins dialog? You can open that here: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options In the left column, click Security. Then on the right side, find the "Saved Logins" button.

You mentioned in your original post that you were aware that there were two files to copy over.

  • Have you tried that ?
  • What happened ?
  • You obviously are aware of the old profile on the desktop.
Did you confirm the location of the current Firefox profile ?

In the event that the passwords information is lost, you should record all information in a separate text file somewhere else on your hard drive, or written down. You can easily copy and paste if you need to do so. If you are concerned about someone else looking at that file, you can compress it using a password.

These can't get your data back, but will help in the future.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

If you get a pop-up message asking to update Firefox or plugins or scanning for malware then such a message is likely a scam and you should never respond to such an alert to avoid getting infected with malware.

  • Only update Firefox via "Help > About" or by downloading and installing Firefox from the Mozilla server and never via a pop-up or link on a web page.
  • plugins should only be updated via the plugin itself or by visiting the home page of the plugin.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.

Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.

Thanks for the replied, all. I was running Norton 360 and it still says there are no threats. So does Malwarebytes.

I am still looking for a way to take the copy of the logins.json file from the Old_Firefox_data folder but still have not found a way to do this,

Regarding the Computer not booting , it spent over an hour running chkdsk, which finally completed and fixed the Windows boot up ptoblem.
