Such messages are only Spam that could lead you to Fake Support. Not only can they damage or hack your system, they charge you to do so.

I also keep getting this message; it opens a new tab, entire page is orange with firefox logo, and says it needs to be updated. I get this a lot, how can I stop this? If it's not legit, why can't Mozilla stop it from happening?

People are working on solving this.

Unfortunately, the malware distribution page keeps moving to new sites on a daily basis. Firefox's built-in phishing and malware protection feature uses a list of bad sites compiled by Google. (You can contribute new sites to the listing here: https://www.google.com/safebrowsing/report_badware/.) Because the sites keep changing, and the unique URLs of the malware make it difficult to confirm from test systems, the bad sites list cannot keep up.

Since the page appears to be opening from advertisements on sites that users visit, it might help to use an ad blocking extension. These are popular (Note: you would only want to use one at a time):
