some desktop shortcut icons open to NEW TAB not websites

I have created desktop shortcuts, icons, for numerous sites I visit frequently. I'm relatively new to Firefox. When these were transferred from IE they all worked fine. Recently some, maybe 30%, no longer open to their website. Instead it opens to NEW TAB. I can go to my Bookmark file and use the web address directly but why have some short cuts stopped working? Thank you.
