I recently completely erased an extra old MacBook I have and installed the latest version of Sonoma (14.6.1) on it to experiment with. I then configured Applemail to work with my email provider (outlook.com), which went fine, but I'm really not a fan of the latest version of Applemail, so I thought I'd try Thunderbird (which I used to use years ago, and generally liked OK).

So I downloaded a fresh version of Thunderbird (v128.2.0esr) and configured it with my outlook.com account, which finished the authorization process without a problem. The issue, however, is that Thunderbird will not "see" many of my email folders. I have LOTS of stored email, organized into hundreds, if not thousands, of folders and subfolders. For some reason, about 75% of the folders simply don't appear in the Thunderbird folder tree on the left. I have no problem accessing them via Applemail, but Thunderbird just doesn't seem to realize they're there. The other 25% or so seem to work fine and contain all the messages I expect to be in them.

I've checked some of the folders to make sure that some slightly odd folder names (a few start with a hyphen or have a comma in the names) weren't causing issues, but changing the folder names in Applemail or via the outlook web interface does not make them appear in Thunderbird, and some of the folders whose names contain those characters DO appear in Thunderbird, so I don't think that's the issue.

If I create a new folder in Thunderbird, it appears in Applemail immediately. However, if I try to create a folder with the same name as a folder that appears in Applemail, the operation fails with the message "The current command did not succeed. The mail server for account ******@outlook.com responded: Folder name is reserved." in the Activity Manager window.

If I create a new folder in Thunderbird, then use Applemail to move some messages from a folder that Thunderbird can't see into that new folder, those messages then DO appear in that new folder in Thunderbird. So I assume it's not a problem with the messages that's causing the folders to not be visible in Thunderbird.

It really seems that Thunderbird is simply not iterating through the folder structure completely. Since the folders aren't appearing at all in Thunderbird, I have no way to select or deselect them for synchronization for offline use. Is there some way to view Thunderbird's internal retrieval of the folder structure from the server? I've tried restarting Thunderbird many times, including in Troubleshooting mode and clearing the startup cache, but they made no difference.

Any help would be appreciated! I'm liking Thunderbird's look and functionality, but I need it to access all my email or I will have to go back to Applemail, or, god forbid, try the Outlook email client :-(

Thanks!

First let me thank you for a great app.. I have an issue I have been uable to resolve. When I get a new email message I receive the sound notification as it should, but then I continuously get additional sound notifications about every five minutes or so for the same email. This happens if I have not opened the new email but just have the app minumized and running in the background. The settings are pretty straight forward and I have looked at those several times. Perhaps I am missing something in the notification settings. Is there a way to stop receiveing the multiple sound notifications for the same email. Thank you for your assistance, Marty

Dear developers,

The first of all, thank you for your work and for the new Nebula version of Thunderbird.

One thing I don't find well solved in the new version. In the new look of the email list it is not clearly visible at a glance which emails are unread/new.

Thanks for the discussion

I can't seem to update my Thunderbird mailing lists. I know how to do it, and I go through all the steps to add an address, click "OK" but the mailing list remains unchanged. And when I try to create a whole new mailing list, it lets me do it--that is, create the mailing list--but there are no addresses in it. I attach a couple of screen shots:

First, before I hit OK. Second, after I hit OK.

This has been going on for at least a few months. I thought an update would help but it didn't. Please advise how to fix this problem.

Thank you.

Thunderbird v.128.1.1esr (64-bit) (up to date) Windows 11 Pro v.23H2 OS Build 22631.4037 No VPN

Two days ago my Thunderbird installation stopped being able to access my Gmail account. Everything was working fine up until then. Now I get a notice to allow Thunderbird to access Gmail, I click 'Allow' and it fails to authenticate. Collecting mail from my other non-Gmail accounts is unaffected and works fine.

I see these permission approvals are triggering email alerts to my backup Gmail account for this one re: "A new sign-in on Windows" and I am consistently clicking "Yes it was me'" with no effect. I have not done anything to block this activity, and I have no problem logging into this Gmail account from any web browser using the same credentials I am using with Thunderbird ... and which were already in place when this started happening 2 days ago.

I checked in Thunderbird Settings > Privacy & Security and cookies are being accepted, and I can see the cookies in the list.

I have tried deleting the saved (unchanged) password, removing the cookies, and even removing the account and setting it up again, with no joy.

When re-setting up the account this morning, the account creation does not complete and I am receiving this notice: "Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password." (see attached screenshot)

The username and password were (a) unchanged from 3 days ago when this worked fine and (2) confirmed as I can log in to that Gmail account just fine with any web browser using the same credentials, even with incognito browser.

Thinking maybe the Thunderbird auto-detected configuration is incorrect, I changed the IMAP Connection Secutiry setting for the account from SSL/TLS to STARTTLS where it took about 2 minutes on the Checking Password stage and ultimately failed with the same error message.

TIA for any assistance with being able to use Thunderbird once again to work with this Gmail account.

Outlook says that it will no longer let third party mail apps like Thunderbird to access Outlook email as of September 16, 2024? What do you recommend?

"Action Needed – You may lose access to some of your third-party mail and calendar apps

Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access.

The safety and security of your information is top priority for Microsoft. To help keep your account secure, Microsoft will no longer support the use of third-party email and calendar apps which ask you to sign in with only your Microsoft Account username and password. To keep you safe you will need to use a mail or calendar app which supports Microsoft’s modern authentication methods. If you do not act, your third-party email apps will no longer be able to access your Outlook.com, Hotmail or Live.com email address on September 16th.

What do you need to do?

If you are receiving this email, you are currently using an email or calendar app that uses a less secure authentication method to connect to your Outlook.com email account. You will need to upgrade your third-party mail and calendar app to a version which supports modern authentication methods.

Microsoft provides free versions of Outlook for your PC, Mac, iOS, and Android devices which can be easily downloaded and connect to your email account. Using an updated version of an Outlook application will ensure you are connecting in the most secure way.

How can you set up your Gmail, Apple Mail, or other third-party mail application?

Various non-Microsoft applications will have their own steps for connecting to your Outlook.com email account using modern authentication methods. See our help article - Modern Authentication Methods now needed to continue syncing Outlook Email in non-Microsoft email apps. However, you may need to contact the creators of those applications to provide you with instructions. In many cases, simply removing and re-adding your account with the latest version of that application will configure it to use modern authentication methods.

  • Other file types work fine
  • But Notepad isn't in the list when I double-click the file and I have to browse for it every time.
  • When setting the default for another file type, it said this could be changed in "Options". I have Settings, but not Options. Under Menu > Settings > General, it has "Files & Attachments". Under this there are 2 columns: Content Type and Action. The only thing listed is Portable Document Content (PDF) and no way to add anything.* Bulleted list item

I'm down to the last few days before Outlook will not be usable on Thunderbird unless I jump through some hoops.

I've seen posts about deleting the Outlook account, then reinstalling it in Thunderbird and Thunderbird will create the necessary security steps to make it usable again. This seems to be the method that works rather than just going into the settings and changing the necessary security settings.

MY QUESTION IS: I have lots of emails (sent and received from past months and years) that I keep in folders within Thunderbird.

How can I keep those folders/emails in the format I have if it's necessary to delete the account on Thunderbird then reestablish it? My understanding is that deleting it in Thunderbird will also delete all local folders and email saved within that account.

Thanks B

I use Thunderbird on Windows 10; I have a verizon.net email account which I access through Thunderbird. Verizon.net email is transferred to the server from AOL Mail, and I have been able to get and send my emails on Thunderbird at verizon.net for years. This week, after Thunderbird's latest update, I have not received any incoming mail on Thunderbird, but I can see my emails on AOL Mail. The technical expert I consulted deduced that the problem is with Thunderbird such that AOL is not connecting to the incoming mail server, even after the password was changed. I can send messages successfully from Thunderbird; the outgoing mail works.

Version 115.8.1 (64) I block messages by domain (domain.com), rather than whole addresses, because spammers are constantly changing their whole address (nutjob@domain.com). The filters don't always catch them when they arrive, and then they sit in the folder, indefinitely. The "Manually Run" and "Periodically, every 10 minutes" options are both selected. The "Periodically..." option does not appear to be working (as I expect it to), so I eventually will go and hit the "Run Now" button to get rid of unwanted mail. I can also quickly delete them using the "Run Filters On Folder" option in the "Tools" menu. It would be great if the filtering worked automatically. Thanks

Today I changed the password on one of my gmail accounts. I edited the password in Settings in 3 places: imap, smpt and oauth. Next time I started Thunderbird I got a gmail authentication pop-up. Se first screenshot. The email address was shown correctly. When I clicked Next, I got the failure message. See second screenshot. I rebooted and tried many times with same result.

I have several other gmail accounts on this same Thunderbird client and they continue to work correctly. I know my password is correct because I can access this email account both directly on gmail and also on another computer where I set up Thunderbird just to test for this problem.

Any idea what is going on and how to fix it?
