Long time user (15-20 yrs?), I have been avoiding the "next" upgrade for several years for various reasons (hate change, fave add-ons go away, hate change, not broke-don't fix, hate change...). But I am now running into a few websites that won't permit this browser, so it may be time to move on. With heavy adblocking and tracker-blocking and my benign web browsing habits, I've not been concerned about security (never had a virus in 20 years - knock wood). It's just full functionality and slowness at this point. At this point, I see even my Classic Theme Restorer is no longer available, so I'll just have to bite the bullet on aesthetics and deal with a modern browser. However, a couple of things are unclear:

1. does 20 years of bookmark history (and remembered history) affect memory footprint. I only refer to existing bookmarks occasionally these days and may consider a full purge. Partial purge would probably be too time-consuming. Maybe even a full profile purge might be worthwhile for a true clean slate. Maybe FF has come a long way and old extensions and settings won't be necessary. I also have several about: settings that I may (or may not?) miss.

2. Are automatic updates unavoidable in newer versions? I read about "manual" but it sounded temporary.

3. The permissions on many potential add-ons I've looked at are quite unnerving... e.g many of them require full access to ALL my data (usernames and passwords!!!) and I know the function has no need for such. Who has time to investigate these fully for safety? Is there any anti-malware vetting required for add-ons to be available?

4. I know newer is generally faster, but FF has a history of growing and slowing down after upgrades. My hardware isn't getting any newer (although its more than ample for my current needs), but software tends to be developed on latest and greatest hardware. How does latest FF compare to circa V41 in memory usage?

In any case, I thought I would give the latest vesion a whirl on my old Vista laptop (which is currently at V43) and check it out before plunging in on my W7 work PC or home PC. Any answers or insight into such a big jump are much appreciated.

Just installed Adblock Plus on both IE8 and Firefox 37 – got successful messages on both. Checked on IE8, ABP is working great. Went onto Firefox and its not working.

Went to Windows add/remove programs… found the IE version BUT the Firefox version is not present. Went back and tried to install Adblock Plus again and got the following message:

“Adblock Plus could not be installed because Firefox could not modify the needed file”

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

WHAT CAN I DO TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM?

PS: I fully removed Firefox 36 with Revo and reinstalled version 37 – same problem.

Ever since February (some kind of update happened), Firefox has basically died on my computer. I open it and only for a few moments does it work with any kind of speed, then it literally dies to a snails pace. It takes minutes even to scroll a screen or open a menu screen. And that's just being on the Mozilla site. Forget about trying to open any other significant websites. I have tried everything from reinstalling, resetting and disability plug-ins. I will say that the Firefox Icon at the bottom of my screen shows a security shield on it, which didn't use to be there. I really need help. I've been forced to use Chrome, which did work fine, but I can't stand it. SAVE ME PLEASE!!!!

Whenever I go to download a file, the 'do this automatically for files like this from now on' box is greyed out. I have scoured the internet looking for a solution and just about every one of them is either severely outdated or does not fix my problem. I have reset my Firefox more than I can count and yet it does not seem to fix my problem. It used to work just fine, but it no longer does and it is very annoying and frustrating. I have even tried to completely uninstall it and reinstall it to my computer and that doesn't fix anything.

Is there any sort of way to fix this problem? Firefox is my browser of choice and I'd prefer not to have to start using another one. I know it may seem trivial because it's just one extra step, but when you're doing it a bunch of times in a row like I do, it can get quite bothersome.

Thank you.

I have seen this question already posed in the forums about updating the latest version of Firefox, however I am not trying to update the version, I am trying to download the latest version of Firefox to Windows through Chrome. I click the download button on the Mozilla website and I extract the file. At this point the computer asks me if I want to save the file or run the file. I have tried to just run the file and the computer shoots out this message "You may not have the necessary permissions to use all the features of the program you are about to run. You may run this program as a different user or continue to run the program as the currant user". The window gives me two options, "Run as currant user" (which closes everything when I choose it), and "Run as administrator" (which leaves me with a user name and password which are always wrong). I can't download Firefox and have tried alot of stuff. I feel like it is a security setting in my computer that needs to be adjusted but I don't know enough to start randomly tinkering around.

As in all Forums... PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

Firefox was creeping after I had disabled all addons. So I tried Refresh, having been assuered that a number of files, including Bookmarks, would be preserved. I have spent at least an hour trying to re-install some extensions. I have tried online suggestions without success. I have made four attempts to install Classic theme restorer. I have gotten one pannel which suggests that it is installed. but I it does not appear to be operative. I still see the new GUI. This is a substantial handicap, as I am not very familiar with the new GUI.

As far as I can tell, two other extenmsions have not been installed. And I have not been able to recover my bookmarks. Numerous other changes have occurred, including an invasion of Yahoo and Google products. I seem to have a number of plugins installed which I have neither re-installed nor re-acitvated

I am running Windows 7, with Firefox 45

I have to use version 51 so that I can use Java to open Oracle (I refuse to use IE). I have checked the box to never check for updates, Mozilla updated anyway. I deleted everything I could find on my computer Mozilla related, re-installed version 51, checked the box to not update and checked daily to make sure that there were no pending updates. I ran it for about a week just fine, but then it crashed and when it restarted, it was on version 53. I deleted everything Mozilla again, re-installed v51, told it not to install the sneaky background service, checked the never update box, went into the about:config and made sure the setting really said not to update, then went into the prefs.js file to triple check that it really really wouldn't be set to sneak in an update, and then went and double checked that the sneaky background service wasn't installed, then made sure it didn't have any pending updates anywhere. Ran it fine for a day, it crashed, and when I restarted it, surprise, surprise I'm on v54. It shouldn't be this hard to just stay on the version I want to use. What in God's name do I have to do to keep it from updating? Does Mozilla just ignore what the user actually tells it to do and does what it wants anyway or is my version of Mozilla just trying to start the Skynet revolution? I'm pretty close to just writing a vb script to just delete everything Mozilla off my computer and re-install v51 it everyday at midnight so I can just not have to deal with it anymore, but I figured I'd ask for help here first. If I can't get help here, I'll probably just go under my desk and cry while eating glue and rocking back and forth until they either fire me or have me committed.

Trying to allow a manufacturers' system scan after suffering longstanding desktop issues but before this can happen I have to download their support assist launcher. So the problem is, the download is blocked after the run/save window with another saying unknown publisher and so refuses to start downloading. The manufacturer says check internet connection. It's fine Now I've allowed the name of the support launcher in firewall via exceptions but it still won't load. Even tried it with firewall turned off. The download Icon TzsetupSfx, is shown in the downloads folder along with its file version 1.2.0.715 and name of publisher. So what can I do to get the download accepted by Firefox. I'm running 52.7 in win XP 3 pro. The manufacturers' URL is a www.

The setting for downloads was not changed and remained set correctly for "Ask me for file location" which has worked daily previously on previous Firefox versions. I have tried to change the setting to a specific file location and then change back to no avail. The specific location works fine but returning to the "ask me" option does not change anything. Not sure what to try or do to proceed...

How To Make mozilla.cfg, override.ini, all-companyname.js, Files To Work Once And For All For All Users

I'm currently trying to apply a fix to the firefox browser (version 23.0.1) on over 250 computers. Setting default webpages, disabling annoying prompts like the default browser and importing bookmarks, and erasing the history on shutdown, or startup. This is very easily done modifying the pref.js file, but I will not edit that file, it's out of the question. Another FF update will erase or overwrite all of my modifications.

I run a computer lab in the university that is locked down using a Net Support School console. You don't need to look that up. Basically all websites are restricted except the ones the ones I whitelist. The websites we use have extensive API's for JS, CSS, Java, PHP, etc... We utilize technology in order for students to use graphing calculators, video's, and taking module test from these white-listed websites, like Pearson, or Aleks. Now with that said, cookies, and stored profile history become a problem, and on some day's up to 25% of the students using the computers need their entire history deleted in order for a page to load. I think I fixed this problem permanently by whitelisting backend sites importing plugins, and API's etc, that I found from the developers console. Whatever. What I've learned from all of this is that Firefox can be very customizable utilizing the "...\Mozilla Firefox\mozilla.cfg" and the "...\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\prefs\all-companyname.js" (or custom.js) The problem, is no matter what I try I can't get these to work. The closest I got was here:

http://www.intrntpirate.com/?p=615

Again, even that ^^ didn't work. I followed these directions to a "T". What is wrong with the above information provided in the link? Why is firefox making harder and harder for us to optimize it for massive deployments across a corporation and a university? I'm not going to do any fancy hacks to avoid the main issue. I need mozilla.cfg, and the all-companyname.js, and the override.ini files to work, if and only if they are still relevant.

These are what my files look like so far:

name: all-lmc.js
location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\defaults\pref\
pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
pref("browser.startup.homepage", "https://(some url)");

name: override.ini
location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\
[XRE]
EnableProfileMigrator=false

name: mozilla.cfg
location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\
//
lockPref("privacy.sanitize.sanitizeOnShutdown", true);
lockPref("privacy.sanitize.promptOnSanitize", false);
lockPref("browser.shell.checkDefaultBrowser", false);
lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.enabled", false);
lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.prompted", 2);
lockPref("toolkit.telemetry.rejected", true);

I've tried using, and not using, the automatic mozilla configurator. I've tried changing lockPref to pref. Nothing works. Not the override.ini, not the all-lmc.js, and not the mozilla.cfg. I've wasted hours reading through blogs of experts telling us to modify files that don't exist, or beating around the bush. I'm done researching. If you have the answer or want to help me figure this out just remember to keep it simple. Please. I ultimately want to package all the config files, with a how to, in a zip folder onto our shared drive. To have FF customized and ready to deploy to different departments across campus.

I've just changed website hosting supplier; both old and new suppliers run Linux services. My site is scottishcca.co.uk - a correspondence chess site - and I'm using Win7 and Firefox 26.0. There's a page (members/downloads) where members can download e-magazines and files of chess games - the page is password protected using htaccess/htpasswd which works ok. Each e-magazine has 4 download links: pdf, zip and pgn all work correctly, but cbv does not - it just displays file contents in the browser page. What should happen is that the browser should bring up a dialogue box asking if the file should be opened with ChessBase 11 Database Software (which is associated with the .cbv file type on my computer - I checked my Default Program settings). The .pgn file type is also associated with ChessBase 11 Database Software and works correctly - the dialogue box allows me to open or save. All the links work correctly when I use Google Chrome. I'm puzzled - advice please! Iain

How can i revert back to my last version with all my tabs/windows/history restored? I will do a system restore if i have to and then cancel all automatic updates. I honestly dont care if it gives me a bigger security risk.

PLEASE withdraw FF Build 31 from both Beta download and Beta Update. It is a total disaster, and numerous parties we deal with -- 27 installs -- including my own systems, had to revert back to FF Build 30.

Nothing works...tabs do NOT close, Sessions are NOT remembered, past session opening is destroyed on screen, options do not work.

What in the world are the developers thinking about releasing Build 31 ?

Fortunately, reverting to a download of Build 30 returned most all the system back to "normal."

So far.

A few days before this happened, I tried to look at a web page which asked me to download latest shockwave player. Firefox 28 was working fine, but when I was asked by a pop up upon opening firefox to update to 29.01 i found there were lots of security issues for 28 so i manually updated to 29.01 by going to "about, check for updates,etc." Once it downloaded 29.01, and told me to restart, I restarted firefox. When I opened it, I found it is unusable. It won't open a single website. It won't load my homepage. It has all my favorites from before on the favorites toolbar, but I can't go to anything. I closed it and tried to run cc cleaner as I always do, but I keep getting the message "firefox is taking too long to close would you like to force a shutdown" but the forced shut down doesn't close it either. I opened task manager to try and shut it from there, but firefox isn't showing up. I have no idea what to do. I am typing all this from Chrome b/c I cannot use the latest version of firefox.I've never had this happen before. I also ran it in safe mode and the same thing happened. Please help, and please answer in layman's terms, because I am not a computer expert. I took a couple screen shots I will attach. Actually i don't see anywhere to attach an image so I can't. I also don't understand the green "automatically add" button that is underneath this box on the mozilla support page. Also, when I went to the help, about page in the top corner of firefox just now to check the version it says "firefox is being updated by another instance." What the heck does that mean?
