I have been facing this problem from some of the recent versions where:

  1. I open a tab with an HTML 5 canvas [please see note 1 below] with some drawing animation or even online games
  2. I switch to another tab, wait for a couple of seconds there.
  3. Come back to the previous tab (point 1 tab) and see the beauty of frozen canvas (completely stopped rendering)

[note 1] For the test, I also have an open source app that has the canvas (no ads): http://jmblr.rf.gd/?i=1 ... </div>

Here you click on a word, then click on the organized words, that will open a background tab in duckduckgo. Then come back to the tab of jmblr.rf.gd, you will see it. If you can't see, try opening a couple of more tabs, maybe wait 2 seconds for each. Won't take long for the freezing experience.

Now this doesn't only happen with my apps, but also with other apps, and games (well this feels bad to write a site full of crappy ads, but I played subway surfer on www.poki.com and the game froze in a similar way when I switched to another tab).

Recently I was playing subway surfers online, and then switched tab, then came back and saw the game is frozen. It's happening for a month or two now...

I have tried different sandbox levels from about:config (because I previously set "security.sandbox.content.level", and "security.sandbox.socket.process.level" to 0), tried the default one, nope that's not a problem here.

What's going on?

But I have never seen it happening with any other application on my system. I see new major version release in firefox, but they never address these issues.

It seems that as of 79.0 the `lock` file in profile dir is no longer removed at browser close. That doesn't play very nicely with selenium driver (ruby API) when I want to create a browser instance with existing profile name. It seems that profile directory is copied, but this fails for `lock` file, as it cannot be `stat`ed.

Is not removing `lock` file intended?

This can be reproduced with: ruby -r 'selenium-webdriver' -e 'Selenium::WebDriver.for :firefox, profile: "my_existing_profile_name"'

which gives the stacktrace: /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/rubyzip-2.3.0/lib/zip/entry.rb:409:in `stat': No such file or directory @ rb_file_s_stat - /mnt/work/webdriver-rb-profilecopy20200726-75146-9bn20t/lock (Errno::ENOENT) from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/rubyzip-2.3.0/lib/zip/entry.rb:409:in `file_stat' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/rubyzip-2.3.0/lib/zip/entry.rb:551:in `gather_fileinfo_from_srcpath' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/rubyzip-2.3.0/lib/zip/file.rb:303:in `add' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/common/zipper.rb:92:in `add_zip_entry' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/common/zipper.rb:55:in `block (2 levels) in zip' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/2.6/find.rb:49:in `block (2 levels) in find' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/2.6/find.rb:48:in `catch' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/2.6/find.rb:48:in `block in find' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/2.6/find.rb:43:in `each' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/2.6/find.rb:43:in `find' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/common/zipper.rb:54:in `block in zip' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/rubyzip-2.3.0/lib/zip/file.rb:125:in `open' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/common/zipper.rb:81:in `with_tmp_zip' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/common/zipper.rb:53:in `zip' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/firefox/profile.rb:193:in `encoded' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/firefox/options.rb:136:in `as_json' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/firefox/marionette/driver.rb:81:in `create_capabilities' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/firefox/marionette/driver.rb:36:in `initialize' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/firefox/driver.rb:33:in `new' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/firefox/driver.rb:33:in `new' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver/common/driver.rb:54:in `for' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/2.6/gems/selenium-webdriver-3.142.7/lib/selenium/webdriver.rb:88:in `for' from -e:1:in `<main>' 2020-07-26 21:58:10 WARN Selenium [DEPRECATION] :profile is deprecated. When navigating Patreon, I have noticed that Firefox Nightly bogs down/becomes unresponsive within the first few links. This trend has also been observed on Ebay, and other image heavy websites. Previous versions of Nightly (approximately 1 week ago) did not exhibit this behavior.

The regular edition of Firefox also exhibits this behavior.

Firefox Developer Edition remains more stable/responsive. However there has been a decline in its responsiveness as of the July 18th update.

I have tried to create an account on bugzilla to report these issues in greater detail, However I am not receiving the activation/confirmation email required to complete the account.

Opening links from external applications (i.e.: Outlook, Word, a PDF, etc.) begins to open a new tab in Firefox, sometimes it'll open a "full" tab-width before hanging, more often than not, I'll see a sliver of the new tab while Firefox sorts itself out.

Typically when this happens, I'll see upwards of 50% CPU usage from Firefox itself. Memory seems sane.

Hardware acceleration, whether it's on or off, makes no difference. Issue persists in safe-mode, and safe-mode with add-ons disabled. Issue persists in Firefox and Firefox Developer Edition.
