Show me how to find the bookmark manager

I've seen this question from two years ago, but the answer is not valid (any more).

I had several machines with different purposes and when I got a Firefox account, I signed them all in. Now the bookmarks are chaotic, and I want to combine them in a more rational way. I need a real manager that allows me to do this. I'm sure there is one, but I cannot find it.

Currently FF 77.0.1, according to help.

I'm finding that I'm winding up with multiple instances of firefox running. I don't mean multiple windows but multiple sessions of firefox itself where each one has however many windows/tabs that I may have open managed under each instance. As an example, right now on one of my machines, I see two different two different instances when I attempt to Send Tab To Device (see Groot in attachment). This has lead to me losing session data as it seems that only one instance is managed by the restore feature. I don't consider that only one instance being restored a bug but maybe devs think different; I'm not questioning the session restore feature operation here. What I'm asking here is how to merge multiple instances down to one so that sessions restore will recover all my windows/tabs. How do I figure out which windows/tabs are with which instance? How do I know which instance will be restored?

Possible Feature Request: I don't know if multiple instances being started is self inflicted or a by product of some firefox operation encountered during use; I've not deliberately started separate instances. What would be cool is a feature that only allows one instance to be running at a time. This feature could warn if there is already a managed instance running if another attempts to start and help to prevent future possible lose of session data.

Hey, so I've noticed for a few weeks now that across a few different websites like Reddit & Messenger, some words that are clearly meant to be swears are replaced with the same word over and over.

For example, I was talking with one of my friends earlier in Messenger on desktop and at some point he typed "son of a bitch". When I opened up Messenger on the same platform again a few hours later, I notice that it said "son of a boss" instead. I checked Messenger on my phone, and it didn't change the word there.

The same thing occurs on my Reddit account sometimes too, where similar swears are replaced with "boss".

I'm not sure if this is even a Firefox issue, but it hasn't happened anywhere else on my computer or phone before, and my friends and I can't replicate it on their devices either. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Hi, I've got a problem with sound with few websites. I'm using 2 sound devices, my headset and my 2nd TV screen which have speakers. For example I got problem with twitter and google translator. When I try to play a sound from both of these sites when I'm using my headset as my default sound output, it doesn't work, there is no sound at all but when I change to my TV screen it plays these sounds. I have no problem with youtube, netlfix or other steaming platforms. I've just noticed that problem with these 2 websites, I don't know about other websites. Oh, and on 9gag I got similar problem but not every video is without sound, some of them has a sound and some of them hasn't. My device is set to default as in attached image.

When searching for a word on an already loaded page I use find (cntrl f). The word if found is highlighted in a different color. In the default case its a light green. Can I change the color to red bold or at the least the background color in the highlighted word to black or red. Anything that has a much higher contrast. There doesn't seem to be a config option to do this but it may not be under the "findbar" family.

So here is my issue. I have about 500 tabs open on my Firefox browser. Whenever I need to restart my computer, I close my session, restart, reopen Firefox and it loads my entire session no problem. The neat thing about this is that when I do this, the tab title (along with the website icon) is preserved but the actual page only reloads when I switch to that tab. For example, imagine I have a YouTube video titled "Programming in Python", the tab would say "Programming in Python - YouTube" with the YouTube logo to the left of the title. There is definitely some kind of cache magic going on because say if that video was taken down on YouTube, the title would still be preserved until I switch to that tab. In my latest reloaded session, I noticed that tabs #250-500 failed to load the tab title and instead show the website URL with the icon I attached below. Is there any way to reload these tab titles without actually refreshing the page manually one by one (kinda like how Firefox does it on startup)? This is kinda how I navigate and it isn't helpful seeing just a URL.

Fonts, Resources and Scrolling

Hi everyone.

I've got a couple of (not so) small pet peeves.

I'm somewhat used to Chromium based browsers - in particular, I've been quite close with the Brave for a bit now. It's beginning to crumble in my eyes, ever since the somewhat unpleasant incident happened, with people discovering that the Brave team has been injecting their own affiliate links into the sites of different cryptocurrency exchanges, without any prior notice. Anyhow, I digress.

I like Firefox. I like the fact that I can keep all of my passwords safe behind one master password. I like the customization features that Firefox can showcase. I'm not particularly thrilled with 10 different versions of what's supposed to be, as it seems, just one product - from Firefox to Firefox Developer Edition, to Firefox Nightly, Firefox Focus, Firefox Entreprise, but I can understand why they seem to coexist together as one whole. I like the mission that the team of Firefox aligns itself with and I'd love to be able to contribute to it. And for me, contribution to anything starts with becoming a fan myself.

Unfortunately, I've got a couple of things that keep tripping me up. I'm using Windows 10. I've got Firefox installed. I've configured it to my liking. And yet I keep going back to Brave, after every single attempt to remain on Firefox only.

There are 3 reasons why.

1) WTF is wrong with the fonts?

I've configured Brave and Firefox to have the exact same font preferences.

Same fonts. Same size. Same settings.

Same website, for the sake of an example:

https://www.zipcon.net/~swhite/docs/computers/browsers/fonttest.html

Brave paints fonts normally. I don't know why, but it does.

https://i.imgur.com/RSJuzcU.png

Firefox displays the exact same text. But bolder. Jaggier. And uglier.

https://i.imgur.com/xRIr1n1.png

Showing them separetely won't help much, so here's a side-by-side comparison.

https://i.imgur.com/zxQjWE1.png

If it looks the same to you, try to open the images in a new tab and looking at them at full, 100% resolution.

What is true for this site is true for any other application. What looks quite pretty and smooth in Brave looks bolder, heavier, "in your face", rugged, ugly, jaggy in Firefox - and I have no clue what to do about it. I've tried playing with about:config for days and days - nothing changes, no matter which font_rendering mode I pick. I've tried to play with extensions - they have no effect. I've tried to disable hardware acceleration. It does nothing. Fonts in Firefox keep looking like something, made for displays of 2000. Not 2020. If there's anything you can recommend me here - I'd be very grateful.

P.S. Tried and tested on both Firefox and Firefox Developer Edition. Nothing changes.

2) WTH is wrong with RAM consumption?

I remember reading somewhere a whole lot of articles, claiming that Chrome (and Chromium based browsers, therefore?) loves to keep as much RAM to itself as possible. While Firefox, on the other hand, is much lighter on resources. As much as I'd like to believe it to be true, my observations tell me the exact opposite.

Here's a screenshot from the Task Manager of Brave and Firefox with the same tabs and websites opened.

https://i.imgur.com/omhswRZ.png

Compared to Brave, Firefox consistently holds 2 to 5 times as much RAM. Furthermore, it's much more active in terms of CPU load as well, making the task manager claim that the electricity consumption is much higher for Firefox than it is for Brave.

I'd love to know why.

But I'd love even more for Firefox to simply be (a lot) less greedy when it comes to resources.

The fact that the extension library for Firefox is already much more reduced, compared to what's available for Chromium based platforms, I see very little sense in using Firefox if, in addition to making the websites I've gotten used to - uglier, it requires more RAM and CPU power in order to do so. There's just no point.

3) What's the deal with the freezing every X scrolls?

I don't like making these comparisons. I don't want to make these comparisons. I'd love to be able to say with confidence "Firefox rules! Everything else can be dumped."

Instead, however, I'm typing this text, to say that every 5 or 10 "smooth" scrolls on Firefox inevitably produce a not-so-critical, but oh-so-much-annoying lag, where the page that's supposed to scroll smoothly momentarily freezes and then jumps in one go to the next place, totally ruining what's supposed to be a completely "smooth" scrolling "experience".

I've tried disabling hardware acceleration here as well. Does nothing. Tried to play with setting. Doesn't help.

I tried to disable the smooth scrolling feature altogether. In addition to make the browsing experience more unpleasant, it becomes even more painful, as the scrolls that are supposed to be regular and continuous, moving the page up or down in regular intervals of time, happen to suddenly freeze once again and they try to "recover" the lost ground by "pushing" the page forcefully in the direction of the scroll. This is just painful. Brave doesn't have these issues. Chrome doesn't have these issues. Vivaldi is perfectly smooth. What's the deal with scrolling on Firefox?

-

If anyone can guide me here to solve all of the issues I've just described - once and for all, I'll be genuinely grateful. I've tried to find solutions to these problems over and over. And either I didn't find any answer that could help solve these problems even slightly, or I found somewhat amusing, to me, answers directly in the Firefox's wiki - asking, for instance, to simply "Restart Firefox" when it becomes too much of a hog for RAM: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-uses-too-much-memory-or-cpu-resources?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=firefox-uses-too-much-memory-ram

--- QUOTE ---

Firefox may use more system resources if it's left open for long periods of time. A workaround for this is to periodically restart Firefox. You can configure Firefox to save your tabs and windows so that when you start it again, you can start where you left off. See Restore previous session - Configure when Firefox shows your most recent tabs and windows for details.

--- END ---

I am sorry, but what kind of BS is that? It "may use more system resources"? And it may not? Who's in the charge of this? What makes it impossible to look further into this, and make sure there's no need for any "workaround"s? Is it impossible to program it once and for all to avoid using more resources, especially when it remains perfectly still? Because I've seen it myself going from 1'200 MB in RAM to 2'400 MB in RAM - WITHOUT ME DOING ANYTHING. AT ALL. Is it impossible to fix? With all the manpower that Mozilla possesses? Is it such a low priority? Or is it just my PC having fun at making Firefox resource greediness go out of hand?

...

Pardon me, I had to let this out. I genuinely want to use Firefox. I feel much more emotionally connected to your browser than to any other, guys.

But I don't want to experience pain each and every time I use it.

The ugly fonts are not pleasant to look at. And they distract me from my work.

The RAM consumption makes the whole experience heavier. And it bothers the heck out of me. I don't want to restart Firefox just for "workarounds". If I have to restart it, I want it to be for a valid reason. Not because it "just so happens" that the browser "may use more system resources" (with a dropped "than necessary" at the end) - and no one even bothers to fix it.

Finally, I don't want to get distracted by lagged scrolling. If I'm browsing the page, I want to be focused on the content. Not on what my browser is doing. And as of now, every time I use Firefox, I'm forced to think of why is the screen not moving up or down the way I expect it to, instead of thinking about what is on this screen.

If there's anything you can advise me, please do.

If you feel the need to troubleshoot this further, I'm willing to provide as much data as I can.

If these issues pertain only to my system, then the bug is on my machine - and I'd be happy to fix as soon as possible before switching full-time to Firefox once and for all.

Going through the support tickets though, it appears I might not be the only one. And if this is the case, perhaps a more deep investigation into the current Firefox experience, at least pertaining to modern machines, running Windows - might be necessary.

Been too many times when I’ve meant to close a bunch of tabs but don’t wanna to close the session restore tab (it’s my only way of accessing the old session tabs) and I accidentally close that session tab as well, thus losing all those old tabs. Is there anyway you guys can make it harder (Maybe with a “are you sure” prompt) before allowing to close that tab?

Also, when I go into history and click “open in new tab” on a link (lets say I’ve scrolled all the way down to find it), one the link opens, the link gets sent to the top of the list in history, thus making me lose the context of where I found the link in history. This is terrible UI, I should be left off where I clicked on the link (with it’s surrounding context (i.e. date, etc)

I just starting using Firefox, and I've installed it on a Mac Laptop, a Windows Desktop, an iPhone, and an iPad.

Each install is logged into the same Firefox account, and each install began with the same set of bookmarks.

Now, when I add or remove a bookmark on one device, it's not syncing to any other device. I've tried this on several devices. I've tried manually clicking the "sync" icon on each device to try to kick it into working.

How can I fix this?

Every time I download a new release of Firefox (win64 german), I check the downloaded file at virustotal and check the hashes published under http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/<Version>, e.g. http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/78.0.1/SHA256SUMS Up until release 77.0 the hashes matched but for 77.0.1 and also the current release 78.0.1 the hashes do not match, neither SHA256 nor SHA512. For "win64/de/Firefox Setup 78.0.1.exe" the SHA256 hash should be 56cff68e3f0cb76a6404d675f7e1bacc40ebaba7bbb5cadcb4950378656ab0a6 but the calculated hash is 8e69755f257aba44b6bbe5079e17f3bff8b62ddc27de9e1c479686e9ad871dfb When checking at virustotal, the file is recognized as scanned before and the displayed hash is the one I calculated, so at least my downloaded file is equal to the file other persons downloaded. Could it be that since v77.0.1 the published hashes are incorrect?

I have Macualar Degeneration so I use the Windows magnifier all the time. They have added a "Read from here" feature where you click where you want it to start reading and it should read the text. When I click the voice says, "Disabled." I have checked in Options the setting for "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" and it was unchecked. I tried checking that and it made no difference. I opened a text document and the feature worked fine. In Microsoft apps, it works fine. In an OpenOffice text document it says "Cannot read from here" - it must not be compatible with OpenOffice. The fact that it says "Disabled" in Firefox makes me think that there's a setting that can be changed to enable it. I have iCloud Bookmarks, Instagram Photo Plus, Video Download Helper, extensions active and AdBlock Plus and Facebook Container disabled. What can I do to enable Read From Here in Firefox?

I just discovered today, 7-2-20, that the latest version of firefox is not compatible with the latest version of the statefarm.com website, while chrome and opera work fine with the website. Apparently, statefarm.com has recently done some upgrades that make it incompatible with firefox. The mozilla developers need to get with statefarm.com to see what the compatibility problems are so that the situation can be resolved. My guess at this point is perhaps adobe flash player related, but that's just a guess. Until this is resolved, I will use opera to access the statefarm.com website.
