Can the "Firefox first-time run after update" (aka. "What's New" and "Add-on compatibility check") be disabled?

We plan to deploy a Firefox update on our campus. The issue I have is this: after the update, the "Add-on Compatibility checker" pops up, then the "What's new" page shows up on the first start after the update. The issue here: we use Deep Freeze to prevent the kiddos from doing any software-based mischief on the machines. But if we push the update out at night, during the maintenance windows, they will be frozen back in pre-first-time-run mode. Thus, each time a student boots the PC up after that, they will get both the compatibility popup and the "What's new" page.

Is there a way I can disable that during the upgrade, so the students will not have to click those 2 items away? I would like for Firefox to just silently disable any incompatible add-ons and not to display the "What's new" page. I found ways to do that, but they involve editing omni.jar and such. I would rather have an official, documented way of doing this.

Thanks!!

Hi all,

I need some help. FF 7.0 crashes at startup / launch every time, including in Windows XP safe mode.

I initially upgraded to FF version 7.0 from the latest version 6 release automatically. This automatic installation crashed, so I downloaded v7.0 again.

I uninstalled my existing FF6 installation, including personal settings, and ran v7.0 installation. It appeared to install successfully, but crashes at launch. I have repeated this process many times with OS reboots without success.

I also ran FF in Windows XP Safe Mode, but experienced the same crash at application launch. FF will now only display the 'Crash Reporter'.

For background:

  • I'm running WinXP Pro SP3 on a corporate machine.
  • The machine is running Tivoli Access Manager (but I choose not to use it)
  • I've run an AVG Free anti-virus scan with no results.
  • I ran a MalwareBytes Anti Malware scan. One infection was found (since rectified) as follows:

Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\DisableConfig (Windows.Tool.Disabled)

Please let me know if you need more info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Had same problems with Ff 6. 1/4 to 1/3 of pages take forever to load. Sometimes I can make them by highlighting URL and hitting Enter. Sometimes the activity indicator just spins and spins and page never loads. Sometimes place markers appear where images should be. New York Times homepage, for example, partially loads (some missing images) but links from it take forever.

I've tried various page set-up configurations and various printer set-ups to no avail. Basically, the formatting on page 1 does not carry beyond that page when printing. It happens on all web sites, so is not limited to Yahoo Finance.

I've also updated to Firefox 7.0.1 and the situation persists.

When using Safari browser, the problem does not present itself.

somewhere on updating, I picked up a yahoo toolbar, which I did not like. One of the tasks it performed was to bring up a yahoo search and news box when opening a new tab every time. I have not been able to uninstall it or shut it off, Any ideas where to start. When opening the new tab, it starts at "click,w3i.com" and then goes to "search.yahoo.com" and has some trending searches and latest news, My network is slow enough with out waiting for all these things to pass. Any idea how to eliminate it or shut it off. It is not listed in tool bars or options or add-ons or plugins or anything. below are the two links the tab goes through, they are listed in reverse order. Thanks for the help. Have a great day.
