Hello I am having major problems with Firefox at the moment and have done for a while. I curently have four pages open but as you can see from the attached screen shot of my Task Manager, there are 14 Firefox processes. The usage is OTT on memory and everything else. Could you tell me why this is happening? Currently it is running in Troubleshooting mode but that is not doing anything to improve the problem. It has been known to shut my computer down, as it gets too hot. I run on Windows 10 and Bitdefender is my security. All help is gratefully received. Thanks Lisa

Cleanup system memory when closing a tab and not the whole browser

Hello, dear Mozilla support team :).

I have a question that has to do with the ever growing memory usage. I just found out the about:memory page in Firefox, which allows the users to manually free up the system memory by clicking the "Minimize memory usage" button. This is great and it does its job well, however for many years I've wondered why doesn't the browser clean up the memory taken by web pages like Twitch, Kick, Youtube, etc., which take a lot of memory, especially when people leave them open for hours, then when they close the tabs, the memory stays buffered until the browser has been completely closed.

The "Minimize memory usage" button does clean up the memory, so won't it be possible to implement such functionality that can be enabled/disabled somewhere in Settings, to allow the users to choose the browser to unload all memory taken by any tab when they close the tab, but not the whole browser?

This will help a lot, because I personally leave my PC and browser open for days, and sometimes I have to either close and re-open it, or go to about:memory and do a "Minimize memory usage" to free up the memory, that was taken few days ago by a single Twitch stream tab or some other tab, and the information in this buffer is absolutely pointless, but it sometimes takes all of my 96GB of RAM.

Thank you for any information on the subject :).

All the best, Borislav.

hopefully I've chosen the right help category.

When I try to shut down or restart firefox (fully updated) the file in my system monitor called firefox-bin persists. I have to end or kill the process there to turn off the browser. Due to this situation, I cannot restart the browser in troubleshoot mode or anything else. It's cold start or nothing. 99% of what I use firefox for is youtube. There are a couple of channels that when I open a video, the page will not fully load and will not play. The comments won't load either. Also, while those tabs are open my CPU usage skyrockets and memory maxes out...which freezes the computer. It's not all channels.. maybe 4 so far. I've manually turned off all extensions/themes, rebooted and tried again.. no joy. Full system freeze. I've tried to do a clean reinstall over the old files in the Linux terminal.. it just says it's already updated. I could be doing that wrong since the instructions I found on this site only apply to windows and mac machines and I was kind of winging it. Thoughts on what I can do to fix things?

There's a button below this box that suggests sharing browser data.. I'm not using firefox right now, so that wouldn't help.

I have a question (speculation) about having several Firefox based browsers installed on my Windows 64 PC.

I have a Windows 10, 64 Bit PC with 64 Gigs of RAM. I've always had a habit of installing several versions of Firefox based browsers - all to no avail. However, as of recent, I'm finding that my browsers begin to slow down substantially after 15 minutes or so of browsing - please read on.

Right now, I have the following 64 Bit Firefox based browsers installed on my PC - they are:

Firefox Waterfox Floorp Librewolf

I have quite a large amount of bookmarks saved, and I make sure all browsers have the same bookmarks.

I have a half dozen or so of add-ons, and have tried - from time to time - to uninstall various add-ons to see if they were the cause of the slow downs, but none of that made a difference.

For example, let's say I'm browsing for 15-30 minutes or so, and have a half dozen different tabs brought up. After awhile, things begin to slow down substantially such as delays in clicking on links and having it respond, or right clicking, etc. Browsing speeds slow down substantially also.

Here is what I then usually do:

1. Create a new tab and type in "about:memory" and click on the save memory command.

2. Go into settings and delete cache.

This normally does nothing to speed up things, and I find I have to just close out the browser, wait a few seconds, and bring it back up to things to get back to normal.

This has me speculating - "Could" it be that having a variety of Firefox based browsers with similar data conflict with each other in some strange sort of way" Or is it something else? I know that having a bunch of tabs up can deplete memory usage, but as I mentioned above, I have 64 Gigs of RAM and never had this issue before.

My SSD drive has 500 Gigs of storage, and only half is being used.

Any suggestions or recommendations would be truly appreciated.

Hello,

I have noticed that my CPU runs hotter when playing videos in Mozilla Firefox, for example streaming TV series. Youtube seems to be less affected.

My configuration is:

CPU AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D (16C/32T, up to 5.7 GHz, 128 MB, AM5) MBO Gigabyte X870E Aorus Elite WiFi7, AMD AM5, WiFi, Bluetooth, ATX RAM G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB AMD Expo, 64 GB (2x32), DDR5 6000 MHz, CL30 SSD Samsung 9100 Pro, 2 TB, M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen5, R14700/W13300 GFX Gigabyte AMD Radeon RX9070XT Aorus Elite OC, 16 GB GDDR6 PSU Be QUIET! Dark Power 13, 1000W, 80+ Titanium, modular, ATX COOLER BE QUIET! Silent Loop 3 420 mm SOUND Creative SoundBlasterX AE-5 Plus, 5.1, PCIe, 70SB174000003 CASE BE QUIET! Shadow Base 800 FX, E-ATX, RGB, glass, black (4 1500 RPM light wings fans) EXTRA FAN BE QUIET! Light Wings, 140 mm, 1500 rpm, black OS Microsoft Windows 11 23H2 with all the latest updates

The normal CPU temperature was around 47 c (sometimes even 46 c), but it now goes up to 52-53 c. If I disable hardware acceleration, it goes up to 59 c. If I switch tabs to another that only has static content, the temperature drops.

Additionally, when doing the same thing in Google Chrome, the temperature is perfectly normal.

Is there any way to fix this?

Thank you in advance!
