Firefox doesn't start after installation of amdgpu driver

Hi,

I have a laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS CPU, including a Radeon 780M iGPU, running Ubuntu 24.04. In order to fully utilize the GPU by supporting OpenCL acceleration I installed the additional drivers by: `sudo amdgpu-install --usecase=graphics,multimedia,opencl --opencl=rocr --opengl=mesa`

After that programs which benefit from OpenCL acceleration recognize the GPU, however firefox starts crashing with the following error msg:

XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /usr/lib/firefox/libmozgtk.so: libwayland-client.so.0: failed to map segment from shared object Couldn't load XPCOM.

It seems that the AMD GPU drivers registered their libraries in `/etc/ld.so.conf.d` as 10-rocm-opencl.conf, 20-amdgpu.conf which means that libraries within the given folders are found first.

This applies to the libwayland-client library, which is used by `/usr/lib/firefox/libmozgtk.s`:

ldd /usr/lib/firefox/libmozgtk.so | grep amd libwayland-client.so.0 => /opt/amdgpu/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwayland-client.so.0 (0x00007013767bf000)

Interestingly the same `libmozgtk.so` library is used by thunderbird:

ldd /usr/lib/thunderbird/libmozgtk.so | rg -i amd libwayland-client.so.0 => /opt/amdgpu/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libwayland-client.so.0 (0x00007d44b0f41000)

However thunderbird just works fine, so I expect that there might be something wrong with firefox utilizing this library.

Maybe I should also mention, that I'm not even using wayland as desktop compositor, but good old x11:

echo $XDG_SESSION_TYPE x11

Is there any way to further debug this issue?

PLEASE READ UNTIL THE END So, a few months ago I reinstalled Windows on my laptop because I had some bugs. After the OOBE was completed, I set it up and installed Chrome. However, when I tried to log in, the app suddenly force closed and could no longer be opened. So, I switched to Firefox. Everything was running fine. But now (06/26/2025), while I was using Firefox, it suddenly force closed (this is the first time it has force closed on me). I clicked twice on the desktop but it also didn't work, I'm confused about what to do, I absolutely don't want to use Microsoft Edge. When I tried to spam the Firefox icon on the taskbar while opening the task manager, crashhelper.exe suddenly appeared many times, I tried to delete those exe files but it had no effect, so I restored them back to their directory. I'm really confused whether my laptop is broken or if there's a bug in the Windows software? So that's it and thank you.

Every so often for the past few days this "unfinished" program window has appeared on my pc on top of a normal Firefox window (see attached png). Does this have something to do with Firefox? I think the same thing appears when I first open Firefox, then it gets "filled in" and appears as a normal Firefox window. I am running Firefox 133.0.3 (64-bit) on Windows 10 Pro Version 22H2 build 19045.5247 Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.19060.1000.0.

Hello,

I have encountered an issue on some websites where the Japanese text is using the font "Microsoft YaHei" when it should be using "Meiryo." Some examples are on the website bluesky, and bold text on Twitter such as in usernames.

I originally thought it was an issue on my end or in Windows, but when checking other programs and websites such as dengekionline and the non-bold text on Twitter it is using the correct font which I have confirmed via the inspector under the font section. When starting Firefox in safe mode it seems to use the correct font on the previously mentioned websites, so I disabled all my extensions and themes and this did not resolve the issue. I did a Firefox Refresh and this also did not resolve the issue.

I am not familiar with the intricacies on the Firefox about:config to really delve into the exact cause, so I ended up just reverting back to Firefox 134. On Firefox 134 with my same extensions previously the font is now back to Meiryo as it should be which leads me to believe it is something that was changed in Firefox 135. One thing I am considering is that the Japanese text is being recognized as Simplified Chinese by Firefox 135 as Simplified Chinese uses the Microsoft YaHei font as a default.

I have attached some photos that shows my Japanese font settings, and the same post by a user one on Firefox 135 which is using Microsoft YaHei and another on Firefox 134 which is using the correct Meiryo. I have also tried disabling the "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of your selections above" and then restarting on 135, but this did not resolve the issue. Thank you for your consideration.

When trying to launch the browser from a network folder, I encounter the errors shown in the screenshots. If I launch the browser on one computer, everything is ok, but if I need to launch it on at least the second one, I encounter this error until I close the browser on the first one. I don’t know what could have happened, because I didn’t touch the configuration and everything worked fine for us last year. Nothing was updated or changed. Firefox Portable ini file configuration:

Hi people,

I have used Firefox for years but after the latest Microsoft Update it no longer starts or runs. Another product, Libre Office, also failed at the same time and I have been unable to resolve that problem either.

I have uninstalled Firefox, downloaded a fresh copy from the Mozilla website and reinstalled it a couple of times but when I click the desktop shortcut nothing happens. I can right click the shortcut and select the "run as administrator" command and something like the Firefox browser opens but all my shortcuts are out of date on it and the browser will not access anything on the net.

I also use Mozilla Thunderbird as my email providor and that is still functioning normally.

Is this some monkey business from Microsoft, a fault in Firefox or a fault somewhere in the inner workings of my computer?

Kindest regards, Colin Ballard, 23 January 2025

So anytime about a month ago, everytime I boot up my PC then first thing I do is double click on Firefox to open it and that worked fine until a month ago, now when I do it youll see the circle spin for 1 second and spot but Firefox doent open, no matter how many times I click on it, the only way Ive gotten it to work is that I have to restart my pc and try again until it eventually DOES open when I click on it, I usually have to restart 3-5 times before itll open.

Im wondering why that is and how to fix it? I havent done anything new to my PC since then, no new Firefox addons, also if there was a problem with Firefox itself then restarting should never make it open yet it eventually works after a few restarts. soooo i cant be Firefox right? Ive also tried refreshing firefox as well as going to add and remove programs and uninstalled it then reinstalled it the issue still remains, any way to fix this?

I have updated FF on four PCs to 136.0.3. On just one PC, FF launches to a small window which is completely non-functional. None of the visible controls do anything. I can't move the window but I can resize it but everything is greyed out except the search bar. I can type in the search bar but get no search.

I have read a number of similar posts, but these fixes do not work: I cannot toggle the full screen using F12, I cannot change the launch behavior by setting 'maximize' in the shortcut properties, Deleting xulstore.json (repeatedly) does not fix (I have no localstore.rdf), I have no access to any of the normal FF controls that would let me refresh or troubleshoot.

I could always reinstall, but thought I would ask first.

Firefox will not update when I click the restart button. Firefox restarts but does not update. Closing Firefox manually (X) several times did not help. I had to restart my laptop and then Firefox updated. This started happening the update before 136.0.3, which is my current version. I don't want to keep restarting my laptop every time there is a Firefox update, which seems to be happening more frequently.
