Versions prior to 29 allow me to about:config to put Tabs below the navigation bar. Now this configuration no longer works. It is HUGELY annoying!!

How can I configure the Tabs back where they are most useful, below the navigation bar?

Thank you.

Chosen solution

I have chosen to return to version 28 as I really don't like version 29. I've been loyal to mozilla's firefox since the beginning as I'm a computer engineer, and have gone through some major issues through the years, but simply put, I don't like version 29, and now it's become more complicated to simply put the Tabs back below.

I've now started using Google Chrome as my default browser, and while I miss some of the necessary add-ons I've used extensively on Firefox, I'm going to give Chrome a long-term run to see if it will supply my needs.

Sad to be loosing Firefox.

You can easily move the Tab bar to the lower position with code in userChrome.css as basically you only need to give the Tab bar a higher -moz-box-ordinal-group value (most toolbars have a default -moz-box-ordinal-group:1 to show them in DOM order).

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

#TabsToolbar{-moz-box-ordinal-group:10000!important}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

Where do you get away with calling THAT "easy"?

Hi FireFoxFan1, if you prefer a dialog with drop-down lists and checkboxes, then the Classic Theme Restorer extension would work better for you. There's a link to it here: How to make the new Firefox look like the old Firefox.

Classic Theme Restorer removes the colors from my Colorful Tabs....

more options

Hi kstenbch, can you find a setting in Classic Theme Restorer's Options dialog that leaves the tabs with their default appearance so that it doesn't override Colorful Tabs? There are many things you can turn on and off in CTR and often you can preview the results immediately, which helps with experimentation.

I am going to give the extension a try, but why is all this effort necessary for those of us who hate having tabs on top? If a user had them already set to show below the toolbar, then why did Firefox arbitrarily change this setting as part of its update?? Really annoying.

more options

Okay, that actually worked, but it is more confusing than it should be.

more options

No, There is no way to shut them off. CTR has an option screen to color the selected tab, unselected tabs, read tabs, unread tabs, new tabs, etc. However, there does not seem to be away to disable this tab feature that is conflicting with Colorful Tabs apparently. I reverted to Firefox 28, and reupdated to Firefox 29. I reinstalled Tab Mix Plus and lowered the size of each tab to 100 to 500, instead of 250 to 500. That fixed my huge tabs. I installed Tabs on Bottom 0.1.3 for Austalis and The Add On Bar (restored) 3.1. I got rid of the extra space between the menu bar and My Add This toolbar with the add on ChromEditPlus. I got the address/URL Bar onto my Add This Bar, and finally, from the customize menu, I already had installed a search add on with several choices in search engine. I was able to move that search bar onto the bookmarks tool bar.

I just uninstalled the Classic Theme Restorer. They really need to put a disable option on that. The Firefox team also need to stop coming out with updates that remove customizability. It's why we use Firefox, because we can make it look and act like we want, whenever we want. If we want to try and are ready to try something new, we can, when we're ready, not when some programmer says it's time. I basically found Moz Backup and Hekasoft Backup and Restore. Once I had those programs, I could make backups to my profile on my computer and external drive. Then I could just take some time and try things until I got Firefox 29 acting the way I want it to. I could always restore my profile if I needed to, and without having to restore my system....

There is a Classic Theme Restorer support thread over here.

First, I am aware of the "Classic Theme Restorer 1.1.8" Add-on and have installed it. It gives me the Firefox I like, including tabs just above the browser pane. I also like the options it has.

What I am saying it for Firefox to be really customizable it should have a dialog that allow us to drag-drop elements of Firefox; [Menu Bar], [Address Bar], [Tool Bars], [Tab Bar], [Browser Pane]. A Layout Editor and I don't mean an Add-on, it should be included in Firefox.

I use Blogger and I can edit the Layout in just this way, move elements of my page Layout.

We should not have to install an Add-on to get Firefox to look the way we would like.

But why the FVCK do I HAVE to do that AGAIN!

LEAVE OUR PERSONAL SETTINGS ALONE ALREADY. YOU DO _NOT_ KNOW WHAT _WE_ WANT.

There are SOOOO many users replying in my post saying virtually the exact spirit of the meaning of my post.... Why did Mozilla decide to take away so many customizations that could be made by drag 'n drop to put things like we want FireFox to be?

To use version 29 you (mozilla/firefox) have had to make many suggestions that we either go into the css and add our own program lines, or put an add-on that reconfigures it to LOOK like version 28 or lower. This, IMO, simply breaks the spirit of progress that should be in the heart of mozilla's development.

After all the support suggestions by senior level users here, I'm still staying with version 28 and keeping Chrome default browser until mozilla can get us a version that doesn't screw-up so badly the standard user's ability to configure as easily as we could previously.

Hi cmcole101, if you want Mozilla to divert development resources from other projects to maintaining support for tabs on the bottom, give your input here:

https://input.mozilla.org/feedback

Let's please use this forum for tech support for people who want to use Firefox 29. That's why we volunteer here, and not wherever they make user interface decisions.

Yes, I must apologize for letting my posts digress from the original point. When I started this post it was because I DID what to use version 29, as I have wanted to use firefox since early versions.

Just the fact that mozilla made this version so complicated to customize compared to previous versions led me off topic of how to get my Tabs back where I found them the most useful.

You volunteers have given some very useful suggestions and solutions, but making version 29 "look" like an earlier version using and add-on instead of just letting us about:config like most previous versions seems like a HUGE step backwards in development.

In respect to your request, I'll drop off from this post I originally made about version 29 because it's obvious this version is going to remain a complicated product for us users instead of making it easier to configure.

I now close my post on this topic.

WHAT "Chrome folder"? Where EXACTLY is it SUPPOSE to be? (Windows 7)

It's not in AppData anywhere I can find.

Hi JDnHuntsvilleAL, Firefox does not ship with a chrome folder. You usually need to create it. You may find the ChomEdit Plus extension to be a handy way to do it. That is linked in this article listed in cor-el's post:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Editing_configuration

If you want to create it manually, open your currently active Firefox profile folder using the Troubleshooting Information page. Any of these will do it:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • menu bar > Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page (Application Basics) look for the "Show Folder" button to open your profile folder in Windows Explorer. You should get a couple dozen files and several folders.

This is where you need to create the chrome folder (all lower case letters) if it does not exist here already.

Not much help if you aren't an expert in about:config or that userchrome.css stuff.

The real issue is: Why do you people think you know better than we do how our Firefox should look? If you make changes to stuff, such as the location of the tabs, do NOT have the update go to that automatically! Let us know it's AVAILABLE, but leave our settings alone.

It now takes me 2 clicks to get to the history I want and use to get in 1 click. I use to just click on HISTORY and got the history in a side panel. NOW you've changed that and clicking history just brings up a few lines, and I have to click again to get the side panel. OK, so maybe YOU don't want to see the side panel, but some of US, DO. YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE CHANGED THAT FOR US AUTOMATICALLY.

I'm going to TRY to figure out how to get back to FF28 myself, and then TURN OFF AUTOMATIC UPDATES.

Can you tell others HOW to get back to FF28?

Never mind. I uninstalled FF29, found a download of FF28, and now I'm almost back to where I'd like. (I would LIKE to have the "old" separate download window, too, but I'll settle for this.)
