Why isn't the plugin-container.exe crash not fixed?

Posted

I've looked all over the internet and this is happening a lot.

It has made a very good product a very bad product...

I don't just surf the internet for fun it's my living so I'm going to have to start using Google Chrome instead.

What a waste of time.

Please do the following:

Update to Firefox 28 Update Firefox to the latest release

Update all your plugins https://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck/

Ensure that Windows is up to date, and that your graphics drivers are up to date (If your Vista is 64 bit use http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop?os=Windows+Vista+-+64)

Then, restart your machine, and see if you still get crashes. If you do, please come back and let us know what exactly is crashing and how it happens.

Note that the crash report seems to indicate an out-of-memory: System Memory Use Percentage: 92

You can try to check for issue caused by plugins or the plugin-container process.

All plugins removed and extensions disabled.

FF still crashes with plugin-container.exe ploblems.

Latest crash.

When I open a new tab the plugin-container.exe appears and the memory of it plus FF goes over 2G... why is this. What is it doing to use 2G memory?

Plugin-container holds any plugins you are running at that time, so if the memory usage of plugin-container spikes, it actually isn't Firefox's memory usage that is spiking it is the third-party plugin you are running. Can you tell me what plugin you are running on the page when you see crashes and memory spikes? Flash, Java, etc?

Basically the crash you are getting is just that the plugin runs out of memory, causing Firefox to crash.

Hi,

I have followed the two previous replies and removed all the plugins.

So there are no plugins running.

Take a look at the crash report I posted.

I did, and it's an out of memory crash related to some plugin.

Please try the following:

  • Go to about:config in your URL bar, accept the warning
  • Search for dom.ipc.plugins.enabled, set it to false (note this is only a temporary testing solution, not for long term)
  • test and see if you still crash

Hmmm, can you please tell me your exact steps that get Firefox to crash? What you do, how many tabs you have open, what pages you go to?

Also, have you tried in a completely new profile? Profile Manager - Create, remove, or switch Firefox profiles

Ok, I'm looping in some engineers, it's looking like we may need to gather some more information to get this bug fixed in Firefox. I'm sorry it's been taking some time but hopefully I'll have a response for you shortly.

Can you please do the following:

  • Open Firefox, and immediately go to about:memory in your URL bar
  • Click Measure and Save
  • Browse normally using Firefox
  • After the length of time it usually takes Firefox to get close to crashing, please repeat those steps again.
  • Hopefully Firefox crashes soon after measuring the memory the second time.
  • Send the files to me at tdowner@mozilla.com

Thanks!
