Firefox has been "NOT RESPONDING" in title bar and cursor spinning when I have multiple tabs open. Is there a fix to this?

In the last couple of weeks, I noticed that when I had multiple tabs open--e.g. 4 or more, here is what happens:

1-when I am typing (even now as I type this), the cursor frequently stops for a few seconds and that blue circling symbol shows up and it says Mozilla Firefox (not responding). This processes for a few seconds and then it stops. This keeps happening ongoing every time I am typing! it can be very annoying and frustrating and hard to get any online work done...e.g. ordering a product, trying to scroll through and read an article online, etc.

2-I have tried closing out the whole program and all the tabs and starting over again with creating new tabs and it happens again.

3-The only time it stopped is when Firefox crashed a few weeks ago and I submitted a crash report, and it went away for a time, and then it started happening again out of the blue.

I use Windows 7, and use Firefox version 23.0.1

If you have any questions that I can answer to help you diagnose the problem, please ask.

Hello jesterabk, Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

I will lock this thread as the other one also has a reply in it.

It would have been best of course to have asked the second question here.
