CP is at 100% meaning computer is maxed out bad performance Win 2k is the Operating System 9.0 seems to be the worse performer 4.0 maxes at 100 but not as frequently Research indicates increased ads and non essential overhead hurts, something related to a "Flash" So............ How do I inhibit all the graphics and ads??

That hardware should be sufficient for Firefox 4.0 and 9.0, and I see that you're using Shockwave Flash 10.3 r183 (which may be the newest available for W2K) which I found better for my older hardware (AMD64 2.2 GHz 2.0GB RAM) on WinXP, than the Flash 11 versions.

Flashblock is an option to just block Flash, but I prefer NoScript which will block most plugins from automatically running and allows the user to start each "presentation" when they want to see it. Plus NoScript permits the user to select what JavaScript is allowed to run on domain by domain basis. It's a royal pain-in-the-arse until you get those permissions set for your most visited web sites, but I wouldn't surf without it.

Hi calx,

Have you looked at the Knowledge Base article Firefox uses too much memory or CPU resources - How to fix or Firefox uses too much memory or CPU resources - How to fix? There is a lot of great information in there.

Hopefully this helps!

100% of what?

Did that PC come with W2K? Most PC's of that vintage had like less than 600 MHz processors.
Or is that a newer computer that you installed W2K on yourself?

Does it meet the hardware requirements for 4.0 (and 9.0)?
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/4.0/system-requirements/
Recommended Hardware

   * Pentium 4 or newer processor that supports SSE2
   * 512MB of RAM
   * 200MB of hard drive space

SSE may work, but a processor of 750MHz or less might be less than what will work without problems with a Firefox 4+ version, especially where Flash is concerned. And less than 1GB of RAM can be problematic, too.

Thank you for your interest in my problem. Actually i downloaded FlashBlock and disabled Java Scripts and Firefox improved at the expense of IE which died for some reason. I downloaded IE 6 which promptly killed the works, the internet connections that is. Avast support tells me its a virus, so I restore an image backup but still have the CPU problems. Any suggestions where I get a virus free download of NoScript? I am almost convinced all the ads are killin performance. BTW virus scan indicates no viruses on the before restore or after restore versions. NoScript sounds interesting, Unfortunately I will miss the ads with the cute chicks!!!

well, I held my breath and downloaded NoScript and glad I did, I got my browser back!!!! Thank you very much for the tip, I think I will spend most of the day just scrolling through the news items (thankfully without delay).
