Firefox crashes

Hello, I am trying to open up Firefox on my Mac OSX Snow Leopard (10.6.8) but it will not open. When I click on it, it freezes and then I go to FORCE QUIT and on the force quit it says that firefox is not responding.

The only suggestions I have read online are to restart in safe mode. The problem with that safe-mode suggestion is that I CAN NOT EVEN START firefox. The firefox web-browser window totally freezes from the moment I first click on the Icon, and the spin-wheel just spins over and over again. So, I can not even click on the menu option, the tools option, nothing... to run safe-mode.. So the safe mode suggestion is not an option for me.

Based on all of that, I deleted the older firefox version I had (version# 8) and downloaded the latest version # 9. But, even after I installed the new version 9, Firefox still does not work. I then went and did a full anti-virus scan... three times, and it says I have no virus at all! So, what do you think is going on and how do you recommend I fix this? Thanks for your help.
