Problem with Firefox 8.0.1

Yesterday morning, on a restart, Firefox updated itself from 7.0.1 to 8.0.1. It ran acceptably during the day.

Today, my calendar had been reset, and Firefox is running exceptionally slow. Other programs seem to run fine, including the Safari browser which is what I'm having to use now because Firefox is basically not functional at the speed it's running.

Any thoughts on this? Can I try switching back to Firefox 7.0.1, and if so, how?
