Previous Firefox versions had an "X" in the Tab Bar that would stop the loading of the page if you clicked it. There was also a bar graph on the lower right of the page that showed the loading progress. I want them back, but can't find them on the latest upgrade.

Chosen solution

Stop button
NOTE: The "X" at the end of the Tab Bar (red X in Firefox 3.6.x and smaller, gray/black "x" in Firefox 4-current) is used to Close tab (currently selected tab).
In Firefox 4 and newer versions, the Go, Stop and Reload buttons are combined in one button at the right end of the Location/URL/Address bar. The button changes depending on the activity:

  • green Go arrow when typing in the address bar
  • red Stop ("X") button while page is loading
  • gray Reload (circular arrow) when page is finished loading.

Separate buttons are possible:

  1. Open Customize Toolbar window by clicking Firefox button > Option > Toolbar Layout OR clicking View > Toolbars > Customize if using the Menu Bar OR right-click in an empty space on a toolbar and choose Customize
  2. While the Customize window is open, Stop and Reload buttons will show separated between the address bar and the search bar
  3. While the Customize window is open, drag the buttons anywhere on the Navigation toolbar
    • order Reload-Stop will combine into one button
    • order Stop-Reload will remain separate buttons
    • or drag a "Separator" from the Customize window between Reload-Stop and they will remain separate
  4. click Done at bottom right of Customize window to finish and close the Customize window.

Page loading progress bar
The Status Bar is no longer part of Firefox; it has been replaced by the Add-on Bar. The Status Bar is not likely to return. You can install the following add-on to get some of the former Status Bar functions back, including "bar graph on the lower right of the page that showed the loading progress" (i.e., the Progress bar/meter). The Add-on Bar must be turned on. The add-on will also stop the showing of the "tooltip" type status loading text, and will, instead, show it in the Add-on Bar:

  • Turning on/displaying the Add-on Bar:
    • Add-on Bar checked = displayed; unchecked = not displayed
    • Click Add-on Bar to check/uncheck after doing one of the following
      • Firefox button > Options
      • File > View > Toolbars (if using the Menu Bar)
      • right-click in the empty space at the end of the Tabs Bar
      • ALT+V+T+A (toggles Add-on Bar on or off; i.e., checks/unchecks without clicking on Add-on Bar)
  • Status-4-Evar add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/
  • After install and restart:
    • Open Customze window (Firefox button > Options > Toolbar Layout OR View > Toolbars > Customize OR ALT+V+T+C OR right-click in the empty space at the end of the Tab Bar and choose Customize)
    • While Customize window is open, drag "Status Text" (site URL when loading or on mouse-over a link), "Progress Meter" (page loading progress bar), and "Download Status" (download in progress and how many) from the Customize window to the Add-on Bar in the order and position you want them to appear. Then click "Done" button at lower right on the Customize window.
