I keep getting demands to update my version of firefox every time I wake up my computer, but I use a Power PC and the newest version isn't compatible. Please, either create a version that will work with OS 10.5.8 or fix the updater so it does a comparison between the OS of the host and the system requirements of the update. I know you should be able do it because you have the full details of my PC listed below. Otherwise, I'll probably give up firefox because of the nuisance value! Sorry

Chosen solution

You need to download and install Firefox 3.6.x like I posted above in my first post in this thread. Firefox 4 versions and later won't run on a PowerPC Mac.

For an unofficial Firefox 6 compatible version (TenFourFox) that runs on PowerPC Macs with OS X 10.4.11 or OS X 10.5.8 you can look at:

You are using Firefox 3.6 according to your system details aside. That version has had updates (one may have been specific to OS X) and the current version is 3.6.22 that is why you are being given reminders to update.

I would suggest you allow those updates. You may at some stage get screens reminding you that it is not the current release, but it will not currently attempt to upgrade you beyond Firefox 3.6 versions

I keep trying - the update fails because it is not compatible with my operating system. The update is for Lion! I have Leopard. See the problem? Mozilla is telling me to update with a version that does not support my OS. So the update fails. And next time I wake up firefox - it tells me to update my version with one that is not compatible so the update fails and the next time I wa...... OK? The problem is that the firefox update checker is not checking that the latest version of firefox is compatible with the system on my PC. It is only checking if I have the latest version of firefox. Over to the developers.....

I am not a Mac user. But I do know my Firefox 3.6 does NOT try to upgrade to firefox 6, so I do not see why yours should.

Why not use

  • Are you able to try the method ?
  • Does it work and update within Firefox 3.6 not trying to update you to Firefox 6 ?

Your firefox is shown in system details as 3.6.16 and it should be trying to upgrade you to 3.6.22.

Maybe some Mac user can help you, and confirm this is not normally a problem, and so no developer work is required. (else confirm there is some issue and investigate or file a bug)

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

  • Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
  • Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

Thank you for the attempts but I can't help but feel that you are missing something. The firefox upgrade is built for an Operating System I am not and cannot use. The Mac OS Lion is for Intel Macs. Mine is a Power PC therefore it cannot run it. Firefox 3.6.22 is built for Lion. It cannot work on my PC. It, itself, tells me I cannot upgrade to it when I try to. The operative word hear is incompatible That's what you're not reading. Firefox 3.6.22 itself is incompatible with my operating system. The problem is with the code that is checking for upgrades. It is not checking for the OS on my machine, just the version of firefox, therefore, it continually tells me to upgrade to a version I cannot use. I have now turned off the automatic check for updates on the assumption that all future upgrades will be Lion based and incompatible with my PC. At least I will no longer be pestered to update to a version that doesn't work with my OS.

Firefox 3.6 is not built for Lion, and as far as I am aware is compatible with your OS, 3.6 having been released long before lion was.

PS

iirc we did at one stage have precisely that problem with inappropriate upgrades being offered ot Mac users, but afaik that problem was solved.

The Firefox 3.6.x builds are universal binaries that have files for PowerPC and Intel Mac.

And as of Firefox 4.0 the PowerPC was removed and the 64-bit was added in place with the 32-bit build.

I have downloaded the latest version and trashed the old one before reinstalling. Here are the results The first is what happens when I try to open the new version on my NON-INTEL powered MAC PPC G5. The second is what I then looked up (not for the first time) on the Firefox home page - accessed, now, of course, from Safari. The third, shows in clear black and white, what I have been saying all along. The new Firefox version is not compatible with my PC. So - now the question is - how do I get my old version back - because I emptied my trash before mounting the new one.

OK - so I should have the link more carefully before. My apologies. I did try to find a place to download the old version before I posted the other question but I couldn't find a way in. Everything pointed to the newest one. So thanks, I'm back up and running.

OK

Glad we helped and that it is fixed.
