why does firefox keep freezing and will not shut down as described in troubleshooting guide

every few minutes firefox freezes for a few seconds until you shut it down and restart it, it will be fine for a short time after restart and then it will do it all over again...most of the time it is impossible to shut down firefox, I keep getting the message that firefox is running and to shut it down to restart...most of the time I can't shut it down
