Bookmarks lost when attempted upgrade; Managing Profile and Lost Bookmarks don't help.

I tried to upgrade to FF4; because Mozilla failed to inform users we must have Mac OS 10.4 or higher, this upgrade failed. I reverted to FF 3.6; FF then refused to start. I followed Mozilla's advice to create a new profile and transfer the bookmarks file from the old profile to the new profile, followed by deleting the old profile from FF's user list, but the bookmarks are still missing from the new profile.

Once again, this is the kind of crap I'd expect from Microsoft, but not Mozilla. What has happened to the great software and great company we used to know?
