I can't update (to 3.6.14) because Firefox has decided I don't have admin rights...but I do!

I am using my personal Macbook and I have the administrator rights on this computer. I can't update because Firefox tells me I don;t have administrator rights when I do. It advised me to download Firefox 3.6 and install. I decided to try and downloaded the dmg. But it won't install because Firefox still thinks I don;t have admin rights. I have used Firefox for years so the problem is not because I don't know what I'm doing. I also updated my friend's Mac without a problem. At this rate I'll have to g back to Safari, which I haven't used for years!!
