On our website, when a name is taken from its db, the space between the first and last name appears as ' '. Obviously, this is code for the space that should appear, instead.

Did you leave out the semi-colon on the web page, too? Tags like that start with an ampersand and end with a semi-colon, forget either and the incomplete "code" will be displayed on the page.
