when the email notifer comes up it says "e.g. 4 unread mess. really only 1 unread .. how to get more accuracy there

when the email notifer for my hotmail account appears in the bottom right corner, it will indicate for example 4 unread messages in your inbox...but in fact there may be only 1 or 2 unread even though there are still 4 messages in the inbox...how do I get the notifer to recognize the previously read emails, and only pick up the "new" ones?

Every time Firefox opened

when the email notifer for my hotmail account appears in the bottom right corner, it will indicate for example 4 unread messages in your inbox...but in fact there may be only 1 or 2 unread even though there are still 4 messages in the inbox...how do I get the notifer to recognize the previously read emails, and only pick up the "new" ones? == This happened == Every time Firefox opened
