Chosen solution

When you download Firefox from mozilla.com, you are downloading the DMG file, not the app file. Opening the DMG file is supposed to load the disk image, where you can drag the Firefox app file to your applications folder. See How to download and install Firefox on Mac.

So the question is why it won't stay in the dock. The app file should stay in your applications folder. After you launch Firefox an icon should appear in the dock. Ctrl-click on the dock icon. There should be a menu option to "Keep in dock".
