Somehow I have lost the toolbar that on the far left where it says file, view, options and several other icons incluiding the printer icon. How can I get this back?

Hit the Alt key (Cmd for Mac) to show the Menu bar, then open View > Toolbars and select Menu bar, so it has a check-mark.
