How can I change the default destination folder when printing an email to PDF

more options

When I print an email to PDF the default folder destination is stuck on this one non existent folder. I can change the destination, but the next time I do this the default has reverted. I save a lot of emails this way & this new development is not only costing me time but is aggravating as can be. Before this situation developed the defalt destination would be the last folder I saved to. That is what I want to get back to. Anyone have a suggestion?

This behavior usually happens when your PDF printer (for example, Microsoft Print to PDF or another PDF driver) keeps a cached folder path—even if that folder no longer exists—and then reverts to it every time you print. Previously, your printer remembered the last folder you used, but a recent change (in an update or configuration) may have caused it to stick to that outdated path.

Here are a few things you can try:

Recreate the Missing Folder:

  • If you know the full path of the “non existent” folder, try creating it again. Once the folder exists, the PDF printer may use it as the default and then update it to the last used folder.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Some PDF printer drivers have options to either prompt you for a file name or remember the last folder used.

– Right‑click your PDF printer (e.g. in Devices and Printers) and select Printer Properties. – Look for any settings related to file saving or default location and adjust them if possible.

Registry Check (Advanced):

  • Sometimes the default folder path is stored in Windows’ registry. You can check the following key:
Press Win+R, type regedit, and navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
Verify that the values (like the “Personal” folder) point to a valid, existing folder.
Caution: Editing the registry can affect your system—back up the registry before making changes.

Use an Alternative PDF Printer:

  • If the built‑in option isn’t behaving as you’d like, consider trying a third‑party PDF printer (such as PDFCreator or CutePDF) that offers more control over the default save location.
