Adding bookmarks doesn't work correctly

more options

I'm on the latest non-beta version of Firefox on my PC, but my problem has been happening for over a month now. Whenever I add a new bookmark, Firefox has started remembering the last folder I saved a bookmark into. That's not really a helpful feature but, worse still, it doesn't actually save the bookmark into that folder but saves it into Bookmarks Menu instead. I then have to add the bookmark again and choose the folder I want to save it into, as on the second attempt it defaults to Bookmarks Menu as the location. Sometimes the new bookmark remains in the Bookmarks Menu after the second save regardless of what other folder I select. I haven't checked to see if the bookmarks are being duplicated in that scenario.

I've been assuming that this was a bug and have been expecting it to be fixed, but there have been several new releases of Firefox since I started having the problem and it still remains. Moreover, I can't find anything online to suggest that other people are having the same issue, which makes me think it's something to do with my system.

I'd be grateful for any assistance you can provide please.

The lack of replies to my earlier post suggests that others aren't having this problem. Therefore, I'd be grateful if anyone could suggest any possible factors that might cause this please?

It's making Firefox not viable with regard to adding bookmarks, so I'll have to consider switching to a different browser if the problem can't be resolved.

How are you adding this bookmark as you should be able to change the folder when you create the bookmark ? You can also click the blue highlighted star to move the bookmark to another location or instead drag the tab to a specific folder.

The "Edit This Bookmark" dialog that opens if you click the highlighted star has a checkbox with "Show editor when saving" (shortcut key in the dialog is Alt+S). This item is at the bottom just above "Remove Bookmark" and "Done". You can click the highlighted star a second time to open the "Edit This Bookmark" dialog.

See "How do I change the name or location of a bookmark?"

You can drag the Bookmarks Menu button that shows the bookmarks in a drop-down list and drag the Library button that gives access to recent bookmarks and history from the Customize palette to the Navigation Toolbar. The Bookmarks Menu button has a "View bookmarks sidebar" menu item.

See "How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?"

Thanks for your reply cor-el. I'm just using Ctrl-D as I've always done but, following a recent upgrade (I don't know exactly which one I'm afraid as there have been several more upgrades since), the difficulties I've mentioned in my first post occur all the time.

It means that I have to save a bookmark twice if I want to be stored anywhere other than the Bookmarks Menu folder:

1) First attempt - it remembers the previous folder used when I last saved a bookmark but, regardless of the folder chosen for the new bookmark, it's saved in Bookmarks Menu.

2) Second attempt - although I chose somewhere else when I saved it, doing Ctrl-D on the same bookmark shows the Location as Bookmarks Menu, so it took no notice of the folder I specified in the first attempt. When I save it again in a different folder it then works.
