Firefox is using a wrong default location for me when finding services "near me". How do I change this?

more options

Every time I do a search for services "near me" (hospitals, hotels, etc.), Firefox is using an out-of-date five-year-old location. Very frustrating! How can I change this? Anyone's help is much appreciated - I just haven't been able to find a link to help me fix it!

Sites providing that information can determine your location in two ways:

(1) Using your public IP address

Your public IP address is determined by your service provider (home internet, office internet, coffee shop hotspot, mobile hotspot, etc.), or by a VPN service if you use a VPN. If you are curious what public IP address databases have for your IP address, you can visit a page like the following (and I'm sure there are others):

https://www.iplocation.net/ip-lookup

(2) Using precise location that you share by giving permission in Firefox

Sharing precise location information usually requires allowing access in a prompt that drops down from the left end of the address bar (near the lock icon):

"If you allow location access, Firefox gathers information about nearby wireless access points and your computer’s IP address. Firefox sends this information to the default geolocation service provider, Google Location Services, to get an estimate of your location. That location estimate is then shared with the requesting website." Ref. Does Firefox share my location with websites?

If you were never prompted to share your location, the feature might have been disabled. The article linked above shows where you can check on whether Firefox shows you location permission prompts.

If you were prompted and you allowed access but the results were still wrong, then Google Location Services may have out-of-date information for your home WiFi router or other nearby WiFi hotspots. I don't know how you can get that data updated, unless perhaps Google has a page for it somewhere.
