Doing this requires a password, which I have lost. Is there any way to overcome this? I cannot create a new password without knowing the old one. Sorry if I'm placing this question in the wrong place!

Are you trying to reset the date and time in your Mac settings, or somewhere in Firefox?

In Firefox, there are two password that -- if reset -- can cause data loss.

(1) Firefox Account password

The data on the Sync server was partially encrypted with the old password. If you reset the password, the old data is flushed from the server.

(2) Primary Password

This is an optional password used to better secure locally saved logins. If you reset the Primary password, your locally saved logins are dumped.

Is one of those two the problem?

I assume that you need to take this to a Mac oriented support forum.
