Firefox 95.0.2 stopped downloading any files (does nothing) - Windows 10

Since a couple days ago, my Firefox (latest version as of now, 95.0.2) stopped downloading any files. The "Download" / "Save as" dialog never appears. Whenever I click any direct link on any website, something flashes on the current page (probably the input focus moving or resetting), but otherwise nothing happens. I have then discovered the files with random names and .part extension are created in the Temp folder, and they eventually do download - the files are complete, archives pass integrity tests etc. But there is no download progress indication, no entries in "Downloads" etc.

This is on Windows 10 x64. I have not done anything since the last time it worked (which was about 4 days ago). Maybe FF was updated, not sure, but I'm absolutely certain I have not installed any new plugins or changed any FF settings. Maybe there was a silent plugin update?..

Note: 1. My download folder is not the default, it's D:/Downloads. I have verified there are no problems with this folder, and I have re-selected it in the FF settings. No change. 2. "Restart with add-ons disabled" - downloading works! 3. I then did a normal restart and disabled every single add-on. Then restarted again. Downloading does not work! I have then double-checked that I disabled every addon visible in the settings - add-ons.

So it is something that works in the "no addons" mode, but disabling addons in the normal mode does not fix it. What could it be??

Thanks for any advice! I thought I've seen many odd bugs in different software (have many written many myself, too), but this is a new low.

Chosen solution

Problem solved: I performed refresh, and then chose to restore all my open windows and tabs. And since I was logged into Firefox account, my extensions and settings were also automatically restored. I didn't lose anything, and everything's working fine now!

This might be a setting or other browser issue.

Use these links to create a new profile. Use this new profile as is. Is the problem still there?

Go to the Mozilla Add-ons Web Page {web Link} (There’s a lot of good stuff here) and search for a download manager.

This download manager works separately from the browser. The browser tells it what to download, and off it goes.

http://www.freedownloadmanager.org It is a powerful modern download accelerator and organizer for Windows and Mac.

Thanks for the reply. Will I lose my hundreds of open tabs in 5 FF windows if I create a new profile? I don't mind losing settings or addons, but not open tabs!

The purpose of creating a new profile is to see if the problem is still there. Please do so and report back.

You still didn't say whether or not I will lose my open tabs if I follow your suggestion. Is there a way to store my current profile and restore it later? Or is there a way for two or more profiles to co-exist? Can I switch between them at will?

P. S. I have tried two download manager extensions (one by one, not both at once) - clicking download links doesn't get picked up by the extension. Only the tab title bar flashes, and FF creates a ".part" file in the system Temp folder, as I described earlier.

The data in the original profile will not be changed when using a different profile. You can have as many profiles as you want. You can also use sync to share data between these profiles. Examples: work, games, art, movies, music . . . . .

Thanks for your helpful response. I have created a new profile, clicked the "Launch profile in new browser", and downloading works fine there.

So:

  • The problem is only in my profile.
  • "Safe mode with add-ons disabled" fixes it.
  • But manually disabling all add-ons in the normal mode does not fix it.

Is there a way to reset browser settings, or recreate my profile altogether, without losing my open tabs, or to restore them all after the reset?

The problem could be with settings, but there is no way to be sure.

What you could do is continue using the new profile. Is there anything in the old profile you need to save?

That was very good work. Well Done.

Thanks, but I should have read the Mozilla support articles more carefully. It really took me a while to notice that there is a way to preserve opened tabs.

Also, I appreciate you teaching me about profiles! I wanted this feature for a while, so I could organize thematic workspaces, so to speak, and quickly switch between them. Somehow it never occurred to me to google for it and realize this function does already exist.
