stop bookmarks toolbar from showing up

I have limited screen space and any time I add a bookmark to the bookmarks toolbar it opens and then I have to go to bookmarks and hide it again, is there any way I can stop this from popping up until I want to see it?

Is it dumb to ask why you are adding bookmarks to the toolbar if you don't display it?

I'm not aware of a setting to prevent Firefox from showing the bookmarks toolbar when you add a bookmark to it. You can use the Ctrl+Shift+B keyboard shortcut to hide it; maybe that will save time, maybe not.

In another thread, it was suggested that this might be an interaction with the iCloud Bookmarks extension. I don't know whether you use that one. https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1325806
