printing all blank pages from FF 81.0b5 only, other apps print fine (Win7-32)

ff 81.0b5, last updated 03 sep 20. problem: after 9 reliable years, Canon ImageClass MF3240 printer suddenly started printing ALL blank pages when printing from FF. printer knows how many pages to print, just they are all blank. printer runs *normally* off Tbird, Notepad, Adobe Acrobat, etc., and also from another browser (Opera). yesterday i noticed for the first time that when i call for a print of a web page (FF), i get a really weird looking Print Preview page that i have never seen before. after choosing which pages i want to print (Custom), i click print and it spends a long time sending the print job to printer. then i get all blank pages. sometimes the Preview page on the display goes blank, too. sometimes i get a popup error message 'there was an error in printing' OWTTE. the directions in FF Help for printing are obviously written for the Print preview Page i WAS seeing before yesterday 03 Sep 20. they do NOT reflect the choices shown on the new, strange-looking Print Preview.

what i'v done so far re-start FF re-start FF in Safe re-start computer read Troubleshooting Info in about:support https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-printing-problems-firefox -completed steps 1-9 "reset FF printer setting" completed steps 1-4 haven't yet had the nerve to "Reset ALL FF printer settings" (too scared to mess with the prefs.js file, so far)
