• browser.urlbar.update1.view.stripHt

• Restart the Firefox web browser

Note that update2 preferences are already present but disabled at this point in time.

A second option, one that will resolve most of the changes even if Mozilla removes the preferences listed above, is to make modifications using a userChrome.css file.

To disable the drop-down from opening automatically when the cursor enters the address bar:

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box above the list, type or paste URLB and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus preference to switch the value from true to false

After that, to show the classic history list in the drop-down, you can either:

• press the space bar (type a space)
• press the down arrow key
• type ^ to initiate a history search

This does not restore the drop down list, it will just list bookmarked pages. With it the way it was if I click the urlbar I will get 5 recent urls but I used to get a long list, I wish you would bring back the the drop down and the arrow, it was so useful and now I have to type in urls or go to bookmark pages when I want to go someplace. So not as efficient as the previous versions. The new way is not an improvement.

Hi Alan, unfortunately, there is no way to restore a "Show History" button to list frequently visited URLs. However, if you type a space (tap the spacebar) then Firefox will drop down that classic list. Can you get used to that?

Automatic List

The following preference controls whether a list opens automatically when the cursor enters the address bar. With true it does, with false it doesn't.

• Firefox 78+: browser.urlbar.suggest.topsites -- there's a checkbox for this on the Options/Preferences page:
  
  
• Firefox 75-77: browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus

The automatic list shows the first 8 Top Sites from the new tab page. I think many (most?) people have been ignoring the Top Sites section so the initial list seems strange. You can clear out unwanted sites from that list to let it be purely history-based, or you can fill it with the sites you want quick access to. Add-on Option

I created an add-on to show frequently visited sites in a separate drop-down. It's not the identical list to the classic list in my case, but very similar. Oh good ! I'm glad the engineers saw that I needed to add a manual keyboard command to what I already liked, and had working without doing anything extra. I never knew I needed that. Maybe they can add some more manual keyboard commands to already functioning features. Maybe hitting ctrl-B for BACK and ctrl-F for FORWARD along with a mouse click. Whatever it takes to add little annoying features they can find them and implement them for us ! Bravo !

Hi fourseasons633, although support forum volunteers value your helpful insights, please understand that we are not the developers and while we can offer advice on settings and workarounds, we can't undo changes in Firefox.

Obviously no one likes disruptions to what they're used to, but the original idea behind switching the lists is not crazy: if you clean up your Top Sites list by removing unwanted items, Firefox will (at some point) refill those slots with frequently visited URLs from your history. While it won't be in precisely the same order as the classic list -- there's some different secret sauce in the rankings -- on the plus side, you can actually control the order and composition of the list by adding, pinning, and rearranging those top site tiles on the Firefox Home / new tab page.

Unfortunately, Firefox 75-78 is hardcoded to show only the first 8 Top Sites. Firefox 79 (now in beta) will allow you to increase that.

Give back our drop down menu. Otherwise the people who using and like that will not refresh to the new ff. Why developers brake everything what is good and working well? This is the upgrade? That's it? I am very sad.

Here are two ways to get your frequently visited URLs displayed in the address bar drop-down:

(1) Type a space into the bar

This gives you the identical list. However, it's not a pure mouse solution.

(2) Re-enable the Top Sites list and curate it

Firefox's natural behavior is to show the first 8 Top Sites from the Firefox Home / new tab page when you click the bar. This list starts off with one or two pinned search shortcuts and some popular site URLs. If you clear out that default content, then Firefox should fill the list from your history. You also can add, pin, and rearrange items in the list to control the order. This is the way forward for a one-click list.

To turn the automatic Top Sites list back on:

In the Privacy & Security panel, Address Bar section, make sure Top Sites is enabled:

To clean up the list:

Check to make sure Top Sites is enabled in the Firefox Home Content section of the Options/Preferences page: Customize your New Tab page to hide or display content.

Then when you open the Firefox Home / new tab page you should be able to unpin and/or dismiss unwanted sites, using the menu button for the relevant "tile."

New Firefox 79+ Fix:

Go Privacy and Security loacate Address Bar When using the address bar, suggest and make sure > Top Sites is selected, if not selected. then type and accept the risks: about:config

Locate browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus -> turn it to false

and last... browser.urlbar.maxRichResults -> is set to 10 add the number of results you wanna get when click on bar. I have 17 ie.

It is very similar with the drop down arrow. No restart needed.

Hi dotfrank, a couple notes on your reply (if you want to make any changes, there's a little menu button on the right side):

(1) To show more than 8 suggestions, the number of rows in Top Sites needs to be increased above one row. This can be adjusted on the Options/Preferences page, "Home" panel, or in about:config --

browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesRows -> 2 or higher

(2) This preference that may be left over from Firefox 75-77 is ignored in Firefox 78+ so there's no need to set it either way:

browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus

If it still appears in about:config, it can be removed by using the garbage can icon at the far right end of the row.

Hooray!! I don't have to open a new tab any more just to access those sites I pinned in excess of the standard 10. I was looking for a solution and the info you provided is much appreciated
