I looked at my Usage Details on Windows 10. It says, firefox.exe has downloaded 160gb of data within a few hours. I would like to know why and disable this.

Hello,

Today, Mozilla for some unknown reason downloaded 160gb of data just today. This drained my internet package, and I do not have anymore internet in the package from the ISP. I have to buy a new one.

Can you please advise what I need to do to stop Mozilla Downloading data without me knowing? When I look at downloads tab, there is nothing. When I look at history, there is nothing. I need urgent help to stop my computer from downloading unnecessary data. On top of that, the computer doesn't have that much disk space.

Urgent assistance is appreciated.

That seems pretty high if you aren't busy downloading large files or watching HD content.

First, here's an article about the automatic connections that Firefox makes. Other than updating itself, the data involved should be very small, but it still might be worth turning some of them off: How to stop Firefox from making automatic connections.

Second, please check your extensions and disable all but the most essential. You can view, disable, and often remove unwanted or unknown extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a (Mac: Command+Shift+a)
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
  • type or paste about:addons in the address bar and press Enter/Return

In the left column of the Add-ons page, click Extensions.

Then cast a critical eye over the list on the right side. Any extensions Firefox installs for built-in features are hidden from this page, so everything listed here is your choice (and your responsibility) to manage. Anything related to downloading, that looks suspicious, or that you just do not remember installing or why? If in doubt, disable (or remove).

Third, some malware may install its own copy of Firefox to sneak traffic over the network. If you have exited out of Firefox but you still see it running in the Windows 10 Task Manager (after allowing a half minute for it to complete its shutdown), we can suggest ways to investigate why that might be happening.

I really can't understand that amount of Data usage. When I check my system, there's no comparison. Seems suspicious.

Thank you very much for a quick feedback.

However the information does not solve the issue.

I wasn't downloading large files or watching HD content.

1. On the first point: I checked the article. This is a new set up. And I have a Trend Micro running on the computer. The only 3 downloads I have are a few (1-4 MB files), so it is not re-downloading. The other options on these articles should not accumulate to 160gb download in 1 day.

2. Second point: I had 0 extensions running. I just turned on Trend Micro extension just now.

3. Third point: Firefox was open when this happened.

Is there a way to see what Firefox download on an hourly basis?

A new idea which came to me, is concerning: Web.Whatsapp.com: the web application was open on firefox. When I clicked on a picture to be opened, could the website have downloaded all the photos on all groups at once? But if that were the case, where is the data? There is not enough disk space for that on the harddisk.

The computer updated Windows 10 in the afternoon. Firefox is the default web browser. Can that be related?

Finally, could this issue be related to Windows 10's constant sharing of data?

Any other thoughts?

Hi Alp, for hourly activity, you could view History to see what URLs were retrieved. In many cases, those retrievals go into the disk cache, but many are just saved in memory. Firefox doesn't repeat URLs in History, you only see the latest visit, so if something was loaded 100 times, the only way to know that is to show the Visit Count column.

To see whether Whatsapp or any other site is using a lot of storage -- not counted as a download -- you can look at site storage sizes on the Options page, Privacy & Security panel, Cookies and Site Data section, "Manage Data" button.

I don't think Windows updates would come through Firefox; I think Microsoft uses a direct channel and it would show up under "System" or something like that.

I'm not familiar with Windows sharing, but I don't think that would come through Firefox, either.

I really can't understand that amount of data.

Thanks again for the quick update. I cant understand it either.

The ISP confirms that the data was downloaded, and my package is depleted. I have to buy additional internet.

I looked at the last 24 hour URLS's Visit Column. The only repeating website is my gmail. All others are below 10.

When I look at Manage Data button the WebWhatsApp's cookies are totalling at 12Mb. And that is 3rd in line after 14Mb gmail.

Thank you for the comments.

If there aren't anything else we can check, then I am going to have to remove firefox (my preffered web browser for over 20 years) from my computer with a broken heart.

Best Regards,

Alp

I don't know that Firefox would be triggered to pre-fetch anything while the user is idle. Some pages refresh themselves at regular intervals, such as news sites, but the page weight on those sites shouldn't add up to anything so enormous.

I have Trend-Micro. It regularly downloads vast quantities. For example, on my machine at this moment, "coreServiceShell.exe" has read 106,828,801,346 bytes, written 2,136,558,412 bytes, and "other"-ed 27,806,157,382 bytes.

If the data is too big, do not worry. It's the top part we need to look at.

This will show us your system details. No Personal Information Is Collected.
