Firefox is noticeably slow - it's not using much of CPU or memory and quite a few internet suggested fixes were tried - safe mode, new profile, refresh - no change whatsoever. Config settings for speed were changed back and forth without result

Does the speed improve if you temporarily disable your security software (anti-virus, firewall, etc).

Certain security programs (Avast and AVG, most often) sometimes really slow down Firefox internet traffic or run additional scans on Firefox internet usage.

If you are using Avast, I've found that their HTTPS scanning option can really slow/stop Firefox website loading.

Switched Norton browser protection off - improved from 130 to 190, switched all of Norton off - around 200. Chrome - approximately 600, Edge - 750

You can check the connection settings.

  • Options/Preferences -> General -> Network: Connection -> Settings

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Setting was "use system proxy". changed to "no proxy", then to "auto-detect" No difference

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

Norton was turned off - marginal improvement
