Today I suddenly noticed my bookmarks lists are much longer with bookmarks being duplicated. I have used Firefox for years and never had this problem. What is the cause? Your help would be appreciated. Thank you. Anthony

Dear FredMcD Thank you for your prompt help.

First I must tell you I am old and not computer savvy. However, I did manage to find how to turn sync settings off via settings then accounts then syn settings and turn off. When I did this it greyed out the four individual sync settings below, e.g. passwords, language preference, ease of access and other windows settings.

Have I done something wrong? I don't recall ever turning sync settings on. Maybe I have accidentally but certainly not through this menu approach.

I shall now look at your next suggestion and see if I can do this.

Again, my thanks, Anthony

I just noticed there are two separate lists here or is just that I put Dear Fred in the middle of the list by mistake instead of at the top?

What have I done wrong?

Anthony (stressed but grateful for your help)

Dear FredMcD

I am confused. I just google searched what sync means and it said synching a computer to another device, eg. phone or other computer.

I don't have any other device.

Please help me. I am really stressed?

Thanks,

Anthony

Hi there. You are doing fine. Its possible sync was active when you installed the browser. We can talk about that later.

Yes, sync allows you to share data between different computers and profiles, It's very handy for many users.

[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.

This tests the bookmarks for errors. The report you posted shows no problems.

Keep an eye on your bookmarks. Let us know if the duplicating happens again.

Dear Fred,

Again my thanks.

I shall keep you informed if the problem occurs again.

My browser (Firefox) has been installed ages ago. I am wondering if an update to Firefox caused the problem.

If I have the problem again, how do I get back to you or do I just post another question and hope you see it?

My thanks and best wishes

Anthony

Hello Anthony,

When Fred asked you to press the "Verify Integrity" button : that did the trick.

May I add a personal note ?

I noticed that you mentioned "I'm old" - it may be a cliché, but age is nothing but a number. There are a lot of young people, who are very, very dumb and are stick-in-the-muds - most older people I know are very intelligent and so much fun to be with !

Besides : wisdom comes with age (experience .... )

Dear McCoy,

I mentioned I was old and not computer savvy in case whomever answers my question is a computer expert with a complicated procedure to solve my problem.

There is a very effective add-on to find and delete dupes. Bookmark Dupes

I use several machines and I depend on sync. I think the duplicates are created when I fire up a copy of Firefox which has not been used for a month or more.
