How can I get the Master Password request to be reliably faster?

I use Momentum as my start page. And it doesn't have any required password. Also, Firefox does start with all browser windows that were open last, and some do require a password. The problem with them is that they start "discarded" so still don't trigger the need to enter the password.

Ultimately, this needs to be resolved. It's a deal breaker to have to put a different start page. And as it is, it can take from about 10 seconds (rarely) to more than 10 minutes (often). This doesn't work for me and needs to be resolved in a way where it asks for the password upon opening the browser.

Hi Kenrick:

Please clarify your issue:

Is your issue that it takes 10 seconds-10 minutes to unlock your Firefox because you have to enter your Firefox master password every time you start Firefox? <--- [A]

It should take more than a few seconds to unlock Firefox using the master password feature.

Some thoughts that might be helpful assuming [A] is actually your issue:

  1. I don't use the Master Password feature; I just use the OS's built-in security features; would it be possible for you to do this?
  2. If you disable all your Firefox add-ons does the Master Password unlock delay disappear?

Cheers!

Hi Roland,

No, it only takes the second or two that it takes me to enter the master password. LOL

The issue is that it takes numerous minutes prior to getting the prompt. Thus I may be typing something else, and all of a sudden the prompt comes up and what I'm typing goes into that box etc. It is poorly designed.

If I disabled the add-ons why would I use Firefox? I could then use Brave or Vivaldi or even Microsoft Edge.

The problems is not with the addons, many have this same problem.

I could disable it and likely will. But it is nice to have the security.

You can open the about:logins page to force a master password prompt.

  • Options/Preferences -> Privacy & Security:
Logins and Passwords: "Saved Logins" -> "Show Passwords"
  • "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list:
    Logins and Passwords

Your response was too cryptic and I couldn't follow.

You can open the Lockwise Password Manager to get a master password prompt. There are various ways to open Lockwise.

Would I have to do it every time?

Yes. if you want the MP prompt to appear immediately. You can consider to use Sync as that also requires access to the Password Manager. Otherwise you need to have a startup page with a saved login or possibly pin the about:logins page, so it is always opened. You need to disable on_demand for pinned tabs via the about:config page.

Ehh guess it was a good idea whose time isn't quite here. Needs to be consistently right, not having to be tweaked to avoid having it be a nuisance.
