Why can't you choose cutsom URLs for a new tab but you can for a new window?

It doesn't make sense. Maybe people want a new tab to open up to something besides a blank page or the Firefox home page. Other browser's give the user more freedom when it comes to this. I recently switched over to Firefox and would like to stay, but if this something that can't be fixed I might have to find a new browser again.

You can use an extension, like New Tab Override, to set a custom new tab page.

It used to be a default feature in Firefox, but it was removed. The reason for removing the feature was that a lot of external programs abused this functionality (more information).

Hope this helps.

Worked like a charm. I see why they did it but they could offer search engine homepages that the user could choose from without being able to change from those few. Anyway, thank you so much.

An alternative to a search engine page would be to remove every element from the default Firefox home page except for the search bar. Then, the search bar will be for whatever search engine you have set as your default.

Theoretically, that would load faster as well, since loading an internal page of Firefox is quicker than loading a regular website.
